Ettrick, VA – The Fayetteville State University men's basketball team lost to defending CIAA champions Virginia State University 73-59 on Thursday, December 15th at the VSU Multipurpose Center. FSU moves to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in the CIAA, while the Trojans improve to 7-3 in the standings and 1-1 in conference.
Sophomore guard Isaiah Vinson (Fayetteville, NC) led the Broncos with 13 points. Senior guard Joshua Dawson (Kinston, NC) produced nine points and three assists in his first action in over a month. Senior forward Dont'e Reynolds (Kinston, NC) pitched in eight points and four rebounds, followed by senior center Steven Burrough (Charlotte, NC) with seven points and two blocks.
Fayetteville State faced a deficit for the majority of the first half. The Broncos did capture a 14-13 lead with 12:50 on the clock off a jumper from Reynolds. Waymond Wright put the Trojans back in front on the next possession with a jumper of his own. FSU fought for the remainder of the half. However, VSU sparked an 8-0 run in the final 2:38 of the opening.
VSU held a 37-28 lead at the break. The Broncos shot 37% (10-27) from the field opposed to 48% (14-29) from Virginia State in the initial period. The Trojans made 7-of-12 (58%) free throws, while Fayetteville State connected on 6-8 (75%) foul shots.
FSU trailed for the entirety of the second half, despite trimmed the deficit down as low as six points. The Trojans outscored Fayetteville State 36-31 in the second half to hold onto the victory.
Four scored double figures for VSU led by Richard Granberry with a double-double of 14 points and 12 boards.
The Broncos bench outscored the Virginia State reserves 38-14. The Trojans had a 15-8 advantage in points off turnovers. VSU also out-rebounded Fayetteville State 43-31 on the glass.
Fayetteville State will travel to Kinston, NC to face Elizabeth City State University on Saturday, December 17th. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at Lenoir Community College.
