Murfreesboro, NC – The Fayetteville State University men's basketball team suffered a 62-49 loss to Chowan University in the beginning of CIAA play on Tuesday, December 13th at the Helms Center. FSU moves to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in conference, while the Hawks improve to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the CIAA.
The Broncos shot 36% (18-50) from the field, while Chowan shot a close 35% (20-56) from the floor. Both teams grabbed 40 rebounds. The Hawks had a 24-11 points off turnovers advantage for the contest.
Redshirt freshman guard Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) had a team-high 14 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Willie Gilmore (Fayetteville, NC) followed with seven points, four boards, and two assists.
Jeremy Smith led the Hawks with 15 points. Joe Goodwin added a double-double of 11 points and 14 boards, while Marco Haskins scored 11 points for Chowan.
The first half had five ties and five lead changes. Redshirt sophomore forward William Tibbs (Winston-Salem, NC) broke the fifth tie with a free throw at the 3:37 mark. Tibbs gave FSU a 19-18 lead. Joe Goodwin made a layup and free throw after being fouled on the field goal. The Hawks closed out the opening half with a 23-20 advantage.
Fayetteville State faced an uphill battle for the entirety of the second half. Chowan led by as much as 18 at one point and outscored the Broncos 13-5 off second chance points.
The Broncos bounce back onto the court in a CIAA contest against Virginia State University on Thursday, December 15th. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
