Kinston, NC – The Fayetteville State University men's basketball team defeated Elizabeth City State University 72-54 on Saturday, December 17th at the Lenoir Community College Gymnasium. FSU improves to 5-6 in the overall standings and 1-2 in the CIAA, the Vikings fall to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
The Broncos exploded out of the gate in the first half with a 13-4 lead following back to back three-pointers from sophomore guard Isaiah Vinson (Fayetteville, NC). Elizabeth City State recovered and eventually tied the score 27-27 with 5:41 remaining in the opening. FSU ended the first half with an 11-0 run and a 38-27 halftime lead.
Vinson had 10 points at the break, followed by redshirt junior guard Carl McCray (Roper, NC) with eight points and three rebounds. Fayetteville State connected on 16-28 (57%) field goal attempts and 2-4 (50%) from the free throw line.
ECSU shot 35% (11-31) from the floor in the first stanza. Elon Edwards chipped in 13 points before the start of the second half.
FSU accelerated past the Vikings in the final half. Fayetteville State pushed their lead up to as much as 22 at one point and led by double figures throughout the second period. The Broncos established an inside presence and outscore ECSU 18-6 in the paint in the second half.
Vinson concluded the contest with a team-high 15 points, along with five rebounds. Redshirt freshman guard Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) added 14 points and six boards. McCray ended the evening with 10 points and senior guard Joshua Dawson (Kinston, NC) produced 10 assists, seven points, and five rebounds.
Edwards had a game-high 19 points for the Vikings.
The Broncos beat out Elizabeth City State in rebounding (44-27), points in the paint (40-14), and second chance points (15-8).
Fayetteville State returns to action in the New Year against Lincoln University of Pennsylvania on Thursday, January 5th. Tip-off in this CIAA showdown is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Felton J. Capel Arena.
