JCSU Men's Basketball Ices Win Over Lincoln, 78-71

Lincoln University, Pa. -- (Dec. 17, 2016) –
The Johnson C. Smith University men's basketball team fought off a late-game rally from Lincoln to take a 78-71 win over the Lions in the CIAA opener at Manuel Rivero Hall on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bulls dominated the majority of the game in building a lead of as many as 20 points at  the 4:15 mark after the second of two Cayse Minor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) free throws.  Lincoln would trim the lead to 17 points at 45-28 heading into the halftime break.

In the second half, the Golden Bulls lead again grew to 19 points with 12:37 to play thanks to an alley-oop dunk from Malik Ford (Salisbury, N.C.).  After Ford's high-flying heroics, the Lions embarked on an 18-7 run to cut the JCSU lead to 66-58 with 5:26 remaining after a three-pointer from Cameron Campbell.

JCSU then pushed the lead back to 10 points after another Ford basket, but Lincoln further cut into the JCSU lead, trimming it to a single point at 70-69 after Campbell nailed three free throws after being fouled on a long range attempt at the 2:15 mark.

A Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.) layup followed by a Christian Williams (Chesapeake, Va.) basket pushed the Golden Bulls lead to 74-69 with 1:22 to play.

Lincoln closed to 74-71 after a Carl Lane dunk, but Davis and Minor salted the game away by each converting two free throws in the closing seconds to preserve the 78-71 win.

Davis led all scorers with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Minor had a solid game for JCSU, going for 17 points while hitting three from long range. The Golden Bulls trio of
Gabon Williams (Charlotte, N.C.), Ford and Christian Williams each had 10 points in the win.

James Richardson led Lincoln with 17 points.

The win improves JCSU to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in CIAA play while Lincoln drops to 2-9 and 1-2 in league action.

The Golden Bulls will finish the CIAA Northern Division road swing with a Monday evening tilt at Bowie State. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m.
