JCSU Comeback Bid Falls Short at Catawba

Salisbury, N.C. (Dec. 12, 2016) –
After being down by 42-31 at halftime, the Johnson C. Smith University comeback fell just short, as Catawba took an 80-77 win in men's basketball play at Goodman Gym in front of an Education Day crowd of 1,618 on Monday morning.

After Catawba built the halftime advantage, JCSU was able to start chipping away at the lead, cutting it to 52-45 when Michael Stephenson (Augusta, Ga.) dropped in a layup at the 13:36 mark following a nice pass from Aaron Adair (Winston-Salem, N.C.).

Catawba then jumped ahead by 10 once more, 59-49 at the 11:23 mark after two free throws from K.J. Arrington.  After back-to-back three pointers from Christian Kirchman (Roanoke, Va.) and Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.) drew the Golden Bulls to 60-55, Catawba again built the lead to nine points at 68-59 with7:57 to play.

JCSU would then embark on an 8-1 run that trimmed the Catawba lead to 69-67 after  a
Christian Williams (Chesapeake, Va.) jumper with 5:36 to play, but Catawba would then stretch the lead to 73-69. JCSU would then tie the game at 73-73 with 3:24 to play on another Davis jumper, but Catawba would close the game on a 7-4 run to take the 80-77 win.

Davis would lead the way for JCSU, as he had a team-high 18 points in the loss. Christian Williams would post his second double-double of the season, securing 13 rebounds to go along with 14 points.  Junior teammates Gabon Williams (Charlotte, N.C.) and Christian Kirchman would have 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Catawba was led my Malik Constatine's 23 points. K.J. Arrington had 17 while Jameel Taylor had 13 and Jerrin Morrison finished with 12.

As a team, JCSU shot 45.5% (30-of-66) from the field while finishing 5-of-15 from long range.

The loss drops JCSU to 3-6 on the season while Catawba improves to 8-2.

The Golden Bulls return to Brayboy Gym on Thursday, Dec. 15 to take on Tuskegee. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
