VSU Men’s Basketball Shuts Down Lees McRae, 97-72

BANNER ELK, NC- The Virginia State University men's basketball shut down the Bobcats of Lees McRae College (LMC) on December 5 with a final score of 97-72.

Senior Kevin Williams led the way for the Trojans, collecting 28 points while junior Richard Granberry secured a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Senior Elijah Moore was not too far behind in recoveries, snatching 13 rebounds. Off the bench, sophomore Cyonte Melvin tallied 13 points while senior Trey Brown added in 11 points. Rounding out the double digit scoring was sophomore Walter Williams with 10 points.

The Bobcats were led by Lepreece Lynch with secured 17 points, while Keith Heard, II led LMC in recoveries with 6 rebounds.

Seconds into the first half, LMC fouled the Trojans, sending them to the line to secure an early 2 points. The lead was short lived as VSU trailed for majority of the half. Fighting to close the scoring gap, Brown landed a shot from behind the arc to move the Trojans within 1 point of a 31-31 tie. A good layup by junior Waymond Wright and a 3-pointer by Melvin helped put the Trojans in the lead, 35-32 with 4:33 left in the half.. Expanding the gap, VSU moved past the Bobcats to hold their lead. Melvin slammed in a dunk in the final seconds of the first half to give the Trojans a 41-32 lead into halftime.

The second half undoubtedly belongs to the Trojans as they dominated their opponent's home court. The Trojans were able to have lead high of 27 points over the Bobcats in the second half. Staying consistent on the court, VSU grasped the 97-72 win.

The Trojans led the Bobcats in points off of turnovers (11-10), second chance points (14-8), and bench (33-32).

VSU ended the night shooting 52.5 percent (31-59) from the field, 50 percent (9-18) from behind the arc, and 74.3 percent (26-35) at the line, while the Bobcats ended the night shooting 33.3 percent (22-66) from the field, 35.1 percent (13-37) from behind the arc, and 57.7 percent (15-26) at the line.

The Trojans will play their first conference game of the season on December 13. Tip-off against the St. Augustine's Falcons is set for 7:30pm in the VSU Multipurpose Center.
