SAU Basketball Suffers 85-78 Road Loss to Claflin

RALEIGH, NC (Nov 21) - On Monday night, Anthony Gaskins (Sr./Greenville, NC) scored 24 points for Saint Augustine's University in an 85-78 men's basketball road loss to Claflin University at the Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center in Orangeburg, S.C.


Gaskins, who made 4 of 8 three-pointers, was one of four double-figure scorers for the Falcons (2-3 overall). Quincy January (Jr./Atlanta, GA) added 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Kenneth Collins (Jr./Clayton, NC) finished with 12 points, six assists and four rebounds. Kasey Bryant (Jr./Raleigh, NC) contributed 10 points, four rebounds and four assists.


Behind 12 points from Gaskins, the Falcons shot 52 percent in the first half to lead 38-36 at halftime. The Panthers, who shot 39.3 percent in the opening 20 minutes, made 70.4 percent of their shots in the second half to outscore the Falcons 49-40.


The Panthers knocked down 60 percent of their three-pointers in the second half including a trey for a 76-59 lead with 6:11 remaining. The basket capped a 36-10 run to erase a 49-40 Falcons lead on Gaskins three-pointer. The Falcons responded with a 16-5 spurt to close within 81-75 on Bryant's layup with 31 seconds left, but they would get no closer.


Both teams were hot from the floor in the contest. The Falcons shot 50 percent including 43.8 percent from the three-point arc and the Panthers shot 54.5 percent including 50 percent from three-point land.


Trevor Dantzler scored 21 points including 7 of 10 three-pointers to pace Claflin (2-2 overall). Benjamin Williams added 15 points as four Panthers scored in double figures.


After a three-day break, the Falcons will play in the Daytona Mitsubishi/Kia Shootout in Daytona Beach, Fla. during the Thanksgiving holiday. They will open the tournament against host Embry-Riddle University on Friday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.
