Hampton Outlasts Hawks in Exhibition Play

Box Score HAMPTON, VA- The Chowan University men's basketball team battled NCAA Division I opponent Hampton University in exhibition play on Thursday evening.  The Hawks matched the Pirates nearly basket-for-basket before falling 70-69 in overtime. 

Thursday's contest was scheduled as a regular season game for the Pirates, while serving as an exhibition match-up for the Hawks.  Hampton improves to 1-1 on the season while the Hawks remain 1-0 on the year. 

Five Chowan players scored double-digit points in the contest.  Kevin Kuteyi led the effort for the Hawks with 15 points while Tim Hewett and Marco Haskins both notched 14 points.  Jeremy Smith added 11 points with Carlos Arroyo tallying 10 points.  Arroyo and Smith both recorded a team-high seven rebounds.

AJ Astroth drained 18 points in the win for Hampton with Jermaine Marrow and Charles Wilson-Fisher adding 11 points and 10 points, respectively.  Lawrence Cooks and Kalin Fisher both notched nine points in the win for the Pirates. 

Wilson-Fisher opened the contest with a layup to put the Pirates on the board.  Haskins answered with a three-pointer to give Chowan a narrow lead early in the first half.  Hampton and Chowan exchanged baskets through the majority of the first half until Marrow's three-pointer at the 10:14 mark gave the Pirates a comfortable 18-8 advantage.  The Hawks fought to shift the momentum, chipping away at the deficit and using a layup by Kuteyi to cut the Pirates' lead to six points (25-19) with 4:52 left to play.  Hampton regrouped to head into halftime with a 35-21 lead. 

Kuteyi opened the second half with a three –pointer for Chowan.  With the Pirates leading 36-26, a bucket by Smith sparked a 15-5 run for the Hawks and knotted the score 41-41with 12:18 on the clock.  The Hawks and Pirates exchanged baskets down the final stretch of the second half with neither team managing a lead of more than four points.  Chowan clung to a 60-58 advantage with 21 seconds left in regulation before a layup by Marrow with six seconds on the clock knotted the score and sent the contest into overtime.

The Hawks matched the Pirates basket-for basket through the majority of the overtime period. Smith's jumper with 48 seconds on the clock sent the Hawks ahead 69-68, but Astroth hit a layup with six seconds left to push Hampton to the 70-69 victory. 

Chowan returns to action on Sunday when the Hawks play host to Davis & Elkins College.  Tip-off is slated for 4pm in the Helms Center.
