Fayetteville State Falls t Concord 84-65 in Season Opener

Athens, WV – The Fayetteville State University men's basketball team suffered an 84-65 season opening loss to Concord University on day one of the CIAA-MEC Challenge hosted by Concord inside the Carter Center on Friday, November 11th. FSU moves to 0-1 in the standings, while the Mountain Lions start the year at 1-0.

 

The Broncos remained competitive throughout the first half of the contest. Redshirt sophomore guard Carl McCray (Roper, NC) sank a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one possession (46-43) for FSU with 1:15 left in the initial period. Concord added a three-pointer and a free throw to their total for a 50-44 lead at the break.

 

Senior forward Michael Tyson (Kinston, NC) had eight points and three rebounds at the half, shooting a perfect 3-3 (100%) from the field. Senior guard Rasean Brewington (Goldsboro, NC) and freshman guard Josh Bryant (Fayetteville, NC) each had six points off the bench with flawless shooting percentages.

 

Concord made 11 three-pointers in the first half, shooting 58% (11-19) from beyond the arc. FSU shot 50% (6-12) from three and 57% (16-28) from the floor in the opening.

 

In the second half, the Broncos managed to take the lead. Fayetteville State outscored the Mountain Lions 12-3 in the first seven minutes of the final half. Senior forward Steven Burrough (Charlotte, NC) had back to back baskets, including a two-handed dunk with 13:02 on the clock to give FSU a 56-53 advantage.

 

Unfortunately, Concord sparked a 16-0 scoring run for a double digit lead (69-56) with six minutes left to play. The Broncos trailed for the remainder of the contest en route to an 84-65 final score.

 

The Mountain Lions ended the evening with 18 made three-pointers, shooting 47% (18-38) from long distance. Aaron Miller had a game-high 22 points, including a 6-for-11 (54%) three-point shooting night. Stephen Thompson and B.J. Hamlet produced 18 and 13 points, respectively.

 

McCray finished with a team-high 10 points. Tyson concluded the contest with eight points and four rebounds. Burrough had eight points, followed by Brewington and Bryant with six points apiece. Senior guard Joshua Dawson added five assists, four points, and four boards.

 

The Broncos bounce back to action on Saturday, November 12th against the University of Charleston (WV). Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Carter Center on the second and final day of the CIAA-MEC Challenge.
