This Week in CIAA Men’s Basketball Action
MARQUEE MATCHUP OF THE WEEK:
Shaw Bears (4-2) at University of Tampa Spartans (6-0) Friday, December 15
Shaw enters the game fresh off an upset of 10th ranked Barton on Monday with another chance to deal a loss to an undefeated team. Karron Johnson had a monster game in the upset of Barton. The 6-8 forward came off the bench for the Shaw and went 11 of 11 from the field for a game-high 27 points to lead four Bears in double figures. The Bears should be well-rested following a 10-day layoff for exams. They enter the game averaging 74.3 points a game while allowing 72.3, so they need to play better defensively to handle a hot University of Tampa squad. Johnson leads the Bears in points and rebounds, scoring 22.5 points and hauling in 10.5 rebounds per game. Latrail McCoy (12.2 ppg) is the only other Bear averaging in double figures, but the balanced Bears feature five other players averaging at least 5.0 points per game. Tampa, a member of the Sunshine State Conference, is off to a 6-0 start and has already matched their win total from all of last season when they finished with a 6-20 record. The Spartans are led by high-scoring guard Da’Marko Foster who is averaging 19.8 points a game. Foster has been especially hot in his last two outings, scoring 28 points in a 92-67 win over Fort Valley State and 29 points in an 83-82 win over Armstrong Atlantic to earn SSC Player of the Week honors last week.
HOT HANDS:
Shaw Bears: Karron Johnson, Sr. SF 6-8 (22.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg, 1.3 spg), Latrail McCoy, Sr. G 6-2 (12.2 ppg, 4.5 apg, 3.0 rpg), Derrick Hunter, Jr. PG 6-4 (8.5 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.5 apg)

Spaulding Gymnasium. The Bears also got double figures scoring from Latrail McCoy (16), Curtis Hines (15), and Mohammed Abdur-Rahim (10) as they handed Barton their first loss of the season and atoned for a season-opening loss to the Bulldogs on November 10.
Tampa 83 Armstrong-Atlantic 82
Guard Da’Marko Foster scored 27 of his game-high 29 points in the second half as the University of Tampa held off Armstrong-Atlantic for an 83-82 win. Foster scored 10 of the Spartan’s 12 points in the final two minutes of the game to ice the win for Tampa. Anthony Griffis and Stefon Barfield each added 12 points as the Spartans improved to 6-0.
