CHARLOTTE, NC - The Fayetteville State University golf team had a score of 320 (+36) to place third at the Saint Augustine’s Roundup held Tuesday, March 14th at the par 71, 6508-yard Pine Hollow Golf Club. Sophomore Adam Capps (Salemburg, NC) shot 74 (+3) to claim the individual medalist award.
Virginia Union University won the event by scoring 308 (+24) on the Pine Hollow course. Five Panthers finished in the top 15 on the overall leaderboard.
Along with FSU and Virginia Union, Chowan University, Virginia State University, Elizabeth City State University, Saint Augustine’s University, and Paine College also participated in the tournament. Chowan took second place with a score of 312 (+28), followed by Fayetteville State in third, and VSU in fourth firing 335 (+51).
ECSU finished fifth with a total of 356 (+72), the hosting Falcons placed sixth with a score of 409 (+125), and Paine shot 422 (+138) to round out the participants.
Four Fayetteville State golfers placed in the top 20 on the overall leaderboard. In addition to Capps, sophomore Christian Villanueva (Fayetteville, NC) placed 10th shooting eight over with a score of 79. Sophomore Isaiah Shaw (Altamonte Springs, FL) was 17th on the leaderboard with a score of 82 (+11).
Junior Austen Parlett (Hope Mills, NC) finished 20th with a 14-over par 85. Sophomore Nick Pennix (Mebane, NC) had a score of 87 (+16) to place 21st out of the 39 competitors.
Saint Augustine’s hosted two separate tournaments on back to back days at the Pine Hollow Golf Club. Shaw and Villanueva both earned all-tournament team honors. The all-tournament team consisted of J.T. Moore of Saint Augustine’s, Paul Meints and Bart Kaminski of Virginia Union, Samuel Reid of Virginia State, as well as Shaw and Villanueva.
The Broncos will travel to China Grove, NC for the 2017 CIAA Southern Divisional Championships on March 19-21. Competition will be held at the Warriors Golf Club.
