JCSU's Powell & Steger to Participate in PGA Minority Collegiate Championship

Charlotte, N.C. (May 5, 2016) –Two Johnson C. Smith University golfers have been extended invitations to participate in the 2016 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championships May 6-8 in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Freshman DeJuan Powell (Atlanta, Ga.) finished tied for second in last month’s CIAA Championships.  Throughout this season, the All-CIAA selection posted a 79.0 average during the 2015-16 season.  His lowest round came at the JCSU Fall Dual on Oct. 19, 2015 when he fired a one-under 71 at Larkhaven Golf Course.  All told, Powell was consistent, as he posted nine rounds in the 70s.

Sophomore Joshua Steger (Charlotte, N.C.) enters after finishing 22nd in the CIAA Championships.  He averaged an 83.86 over the course of the season with his low-round coming in the JCSU-Livingstone Dual match on Sept. 24, 2015.  Against the Blue Bears, he carded a three-over par 75.  He also shot a 76 at the CIE Fall Roundup on Oct. 10.

Head coach William Watkins says playing in such a prestigious tournament will benefit both of these athletes as well as the JCSU golf program.  “By having the opportunity to play at such a well-organized event and at first-class courses, it will prepare these two young men to develop their games in preparation for next season and beyond.”

The first round of the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship gets underway on Friday, May 6 and will run through Sunday, May 8.  Play will be hosted on the Wanamaker and Ryder Golf Courses in the PGA Village.

Starting Saturday, live coverage will be available on The Golf Channel.
