Hawks Earn First Place for Third Consecutive Year at CIAA Northern

PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University men's golf team had a very successful showing at the CIAA Northern, earning a first place finish on Tuesday afternoon at Dogwood Trace. After turning in a team score of 314 in the opening round, the Hawks shaved 7 strokes off of their first round score to post a team score of 307 on Tuesday.  With a two-round total of 621, Chowan edged Livingstone College by 20 strokes (641) to earn their third consecutive CIAA Northern victory.  

Fayetteville State University finished in third place with a two-day score of 645 followed by the Elizabeth City State University Vikings who earned fourth place honors with a two-day team score of 695.  Virginia Union University finished in fifth place (696) followed by Virginia State University in sixth place (782).  Johnson C. Smith University and Saint Augustine's rounded out the eight-team field and finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively.  The Golden Bulls turned in a two-day score of 803 while the Falcons combined for a two-round score of 992.

Jared Chinn of Fayetteville State took home individual medalist honors.  Chinn tied for first with Chowan's Rich Edwards in the opening round with a score of 75. However, in the second round Chinn stood alone with a score of 72 to finish in first place in the field of 41 golfers with a two-day total of 147. 

Edwards led the effort for the Hawks, finishing in second place individually after carding a 77 in round two for a two-day total of 152. Billy Britton and Steven Rhinard finished tied for third and fifth place, respectively.  Britton shot a 78 in the opening round and concluded the second day of play with a score of 75.  Rhinard shaved five strokes off of his first round score (80) and carded a 75 on Tuesday.

After opening the tournament with a score of 81, Jordan Francis was able to shave a stroke off of his second round score and carded an 80 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 161, putting him in tenth place.

Christian Fleetwood also competed for the Hawks at the CIAA Northern and finished in a three-way tie for sixteenth place.  Fleetwood shot an 83 in the final round, a two stroke improvement from his first round score (85), for a two-day total of 168. Also tied for sixteenth place was Chowan's Ryan Baker who competed as an individual in the tournament. Baker shot an 81 on Monday and carded an 87 in the second round to earn his two-day total of 168.

Hawks' golfers Edwards, Britton and Rhinard each made the all-tournament team.

Chowan hits the links again on April 3rd when the Hawks travel to Elizabeth City, North Carolina to compete in the ECSU Viking Spring Invitational.
