Touchdown Club to Honor VUU's Sterling Hammond

Virginia Union University's Sterling Hammond has been named the Defensive Back of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Richmond, it was announced on Monday, December 4.

Hammond, a sophomore defensive back from Caret, Va., was the CIAA Defensive Player of the Year as well as leading the Panthers with 70 tackles this past season. He also led VUU with five interceptions and returned a blocked punt for a touchdown.

In all, the Touchdown Club of Richmond honored 14 players from across Virginia.

The 14 players will be honored at the Dudley/Lanier Awards Banquet on Sunday, December 10, at the Hilton Richmond Hotel in Richmond. The Touchdown Club of Richmond is a sports-social organization, based in Richmond, founded to promote the best interests of the American game of football and sports in general, under the guidance of elected officers, with the predominate purpose being to recognize worthy athletes for their accomplishments and to encourage them to continue their education and athletic careers. 

The club's membership compiles a ballot from all the football playing colleges and universities in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The ballot is then distributed to the club's membership for voting to determine the 14 award winners, seven at each level, NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II, III/NAIA/USCAA.
