CIAA Football Week 5 Preview
Games for Saturday September 29, 2012
CIAA Game of the Week
#5 Winston-Salem State University Rams (4-0, 1-0) at Bowie State Bulldogs (3-1, 0-1)
Defending CIAA Champion Winston-Salem State travels to Maryland to take on Northern Division contender Bowie State in another important interdivisional game. This matchup lost some of its luster when previously unbeaten Bowie State dropped a 38-22 decision to Saint Augustine’s on Saturday. The Bulldogs fell behind early and trailed 29-0 at halftime but rallied in the second half to make the score more respectable. The Bulldogs had difficulty defending the pass, particularly in the first half when Saint Augustine’s quarterback Teddy Bacote had six completions of 20 or more yards. BSU did a better job of containing Bacote in the second half, but by then the damage was done. Quarterback Tyrae Reid, Jr. continues to play well for Bowie State. Reid has thrown for 645 yards and five touchdowns since taking over for the injured Jared Johnston in Week Two. Receiver Doug McNeil is second in the CIAA with 343 receiving yards on 19 receptions. Linebackers Antoine Young and Bekewele Amadi lead the BSU defense. The hard-hitting duo has combined for 63 tackles. As a unit, the Bulldogs are tops in the CIAA, allowing a league-low 280.8 yards a game. The Bulldogs are especially difficult to run against, allowing just 96.2 yards a game. Fifth-ranked Winston-Salem State appears to be clicking on all cylinders, following their 35-6 win over Virginia Union on Saturday. The Rams are averaging 470.2 yards and 37.0 points a game, both tops in the CIAA. Against Virginia Union, the Rams played without injured tailback Maurice Lewis, the CIAA’s leading rusher, and still rung up 437 yards of total offense including 171 on the ground. The Rams are the most balanced team in the CIAA. Quarterback Kameron Smith is third in the CIAA in passing with 980 yards and nine touchdowns, while receiver Jameze Massey leads a talented Rams receiving corps with his ability to stretch the field. Massey leads the conference with 350 receiving yards and averages 23.3 yards per catch. The Rams’ stout defensive unit is giving up just 18.0 points and 301.2 yards per game. This pivotal CIAA matchup kicks off at 1:00 PM at Bulldogs Stadium. Live Stats: http://www.sidearmstats.com/bowie/football/scoreboard.aspx,
Chowan University Hawks (2-2, 1-0) at Fayetteville State University Broncos (1-3, 0-1)
Chowan won a 49-35 shootout over Shaw on Saturday behind tailback Tim Hanson’s 186 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Cameron Stover threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns for the Hawks who had 470 yards of total offense. Chowan also forced five turnovers including four interceptions to counteract the 618 yards of offense that they gave up to the Bears. David Fulton had a 58-yard interception return for a touchdown. Fayetteville State is coming off a 20-13 loss to Elizabeth City State. Chauncey Concepcion passed for 167 yards and rushed for a touchdown. Antonio Mayo kicked field goals of 42 and 41 yards to round out the scoring for the Broncos. Linebacker Bryce Williams led Fayetteville State with 16 tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble to earn CIAA Linebacker of the Week honors. Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls (1-3, 1-0) at Lincoln University Lions (0-4, 0-1)
Johnson C. Smith defeated Virginia State 28-21 on Saturday to pick up their first win of the season. Quarterback Keahn Wallace passed for a career-high 338 yards and three touchdowns and Dedrick Anderson rushed for 105 yards as the Golden Bulls rolled up 471 yards of total offense, while holding Virginia State to 242 yards. JCSU led VSU 21-0 after one quarter and then held on as the Trojans outscored them 21-7 in the second half. Lincoln quarterback Doug Cook threw for a career-high 463 yards and five touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough as the Lions fell to Livingstone 48-44 on Saturday. The Lions trailed 28-7 at one point, before rallying to take a 38-35 lead at the end of the third quarter. Phillip Jean-Juste had 16 receptions for 121 yards while fellow receivers Matthew Coston and Kester Lewis combined for 15 catches and 185 yards as the Lions rolled up 547 yards of offense in the loss. All-American defensive end Tim Green leads the Lions with 38 tackles and five sacks. Kickoff is 1:00 PM at Lincoln. Live Stats: http://www.sidearmstats.com/lincoln/football/scoreboard.aspx
Livingstone College Blue Bears (1-3, 1-0) at Virginia Union University Panthers (2-2, 0-1)
This one is a classic matchup of opposing offensive styles- Virginia Union’s grind-it-out running game versus Livingstone’s potent passing attack. Livingstone picked up their first win of the season with a 48-44 win over Lincoln on Saturday. The Blue Bears generated 490 yards of total offense, including 256 passing yards and four touchdowns from quarterback Drew Powell. Powell, only a freshman, leads the CIAA with 1,199 passing yards. He also leads the league with 12 passing touchdowns and has the Blue Bears averaging 444 yards and 34.0 points a game. For all of their offensive prowess, Livingstone continues to struggle on defense, allowing a league-high 51.2 points a game. Virginia Union ran into a hot Winston-Salem State squad and lost 35-6 on Saturday. The Panthers were held to 261 yards of offense and went scoreless until 3:50 left in the fourth quarter. Virginia Union’s leading rusher Jerrell Washington was held in check all night, finishing with 14 carries for 29 yards. The Panthers’ defense gave up 437 yards of offense, including 266 yards through the air. Look for the Panthers to try to use their running game to shorten the game and play keep away from Livingstone’s high-octane offense. Kickoff is 1:00 PM at VUU’s Hovey Field.
Saint Augustine’s University Falcons (3-1, 1-0) vs. Elizabeth City State University Vikings (2-2, 1-0)
The Falcons are flying high after handing Bowie State their first loss of the season on Saturday. SAU ran out to a 29-0 halftime lead and never looked back en route to an impressive 38-22 win over the Bulldogs. Quarterback Teddy Bacote continues to shine for the Falcons, passing for 923 yards and nine touchdowns through his first four games. The talented junior threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns against Bowie State. Fleet receivers Brian Richards and Tyron Laughinghouse have combined for 48 catches, 544 yards, and four touchdowns. Linebacker Chaz Robinson has been the focal point of the Falcon defense with 45 total tackles. Saint Augustine’s is allowing just 17.5 points per game, which leads the CIAA. The Falcons’ only loss was a 24-21 setback to eighth ranked New Haven in Week Two. Elizabeth City State has won two straight after a 0-2 start. The Vikings got a strong game from tailback Daronte McNeill in their 20-13 win over Fayetteville State. McNeill, ECSU’s career rushing leader, rushed for a season-high 153 yards on 33 carries as the Vikings amassed 357 yards of offense. The defense picked up four sacks while holding Fayetteville State to 296 yards. Nigel Rios had a team high nine tackles and Brad Davis had two sacks, a pass breakup, and two quarterback hurries for the Vikings. Game time for the Down East Viking Classic is scheduled for 4:00pm at the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex. Shaw University Bears (1-3, 0-1) at Virginia State University Trojans (1-3, 0-1)
Going into the game against Chowan, if you had told Shaw coach Robert Massey that his team would have over 600 yards of total offense and score 35 points, he probably would have felt very good about his chances against the Hawks. The Bears did both and still came out on the losing end of a 49-35 decision against Chowan, thanks in part to five costly turnovers. Shaw threw four interceptions and lost a fumble to undermine their stellar offensive numbers. Quarterback James Stallons threw for 436 yards and three touchdowns but was done in by errant passes that the Chowan defense converted into touchdowns or excellent field position for their offense. Shaw also got big games from Marquise Grizzle who rushed for 183 yards and a touchdown and Marcus Hickson, who caught five passes for 118 yards and two scores. Virginia State is coming off a 28-21 loss to Johnson C. Smith where they were held to 242 yards of total offense. The Trojans have struggled to find offensive consistency through their first four games, averaging only 249.5 yards (12th in the CIAA) and 16.0 points per game (11th in the CIAA). LaMonta Green and Jared Battle have split time at quarterback for the Trojans, combining for 681 passing yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions. Trojan defensive back Sean Smith leads the CIAA with three interceptions. Game time is at 6:00pm, Rogers Stadium (VSU). Live Stats: http://livestats.prestosports.com/shaw/
