ECSU DOWNS VSU IN CRUCIAL NORTHERN DIVISION GAME; #13 WSSU CLINCHES SOUTHERN DIVISION TITLE

ELIZABETH CITY, NC-Daronte McNeill rushed for 189 yards and three
touchdowns as the Elizabeth City State Vikings (5-2, 3-1 CIAA) won
their fifth straight game and maintained their lead in the Northern
Division with a 28-7 win over the visiting Virginia State Trojans
(3-4, 2-3 CIAA).
McNeill, who has rushed for 824 yards and 12 touchdowns over the
last five games, carried the ball 36 times and averaged 5.2 yards a
carry as the Vikings rolled up 271 rushing yards on the Trojans.
ECSU also logged 153 passing yards from quarterback Creven Powell
and finished the game with 432 yards of total offense. The Vikings
also played a stellar defensive game, holding the Trojans to 153
yards of total offense and a single touchdown in a pivotal
divisional match-up.
After Virginia State scored the game’s first touchdown on a
3-yard pass from Jared Battle to Alan Anderson late in the first
quarter, Elizabeth City State scored 28 unanswered points over the
final three quarters to cruise to the Homecoming victory. In
addition to McNeill’s three scores, the Vikings also scored a
rushing touchdown from DeAundre Barfield.
In other CIAA action…In Salisbury, North Carolina, Nicholas
Cooper rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns and Dominique
Fitzgerald accounted for 154 all-purpose yards and two scores as
13th ranked Winston-Salem State improved to 7-0, 6-0 CIAA and
clinched the Southern Division title with a easy 62-7 win over
Livingstone (1-6, 0-4 CIAA).
