Saint Augustine’s Downs #1 Virginia State 10-6; Shaw Defeats ECSU 12-8 In CIAA Baseball Opening-Round Play

PETERSBURG, VA - The Saint Augustine’s College Falcons used a seven-run eighth inning to down the top-seeded Trojans of Virginia State University, and Shaw University scored eight of their 12 runs over the final five innings of play in first-round action from the 2006 CIAA Men’s Baseball Championships in Petersburg, VA on Thursday afternoon.

The Falcons, trailing VSU in the contest, rallied for a monster eighth inning as they tallied seven runs on six hits and benefited from a Virginia State University error en route to a 10-6 win over the top-ranked Trojans.

The Shaw University Bears scored eight runs in the final five innings of play as they tallied four runs in the fifth inning and added two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings en route to a 12-8 win over Elizabeth City State University.

First-round action continues on into the evening on Thursday with semifinal action slated to begin on Friday morning from the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA.
