Shaw Downs Virginia State 7-2 To Earn CIAA Baseball Championship

PETERSBURG, VA - The Shaw University Bears tallied five runs over the final four innings of play as they broke open a 2-2 tie game en route to defeating the Virginia State University Trojans by the score of 7-2 in the Championship game of the 2006 CIAA Men’s Baseball Championships in Petersburg, VA on Sunday afternoon.
The Bears, who came into the double-elimination format championship needing to only defeat the Trojans once, were hammered 15-4 in the first championship game as Virginia State forced a second, and final, championship matchup.
Shaw University Casey Welch turned in seven solid innings of play as he allowed only five hits and two runs while striking out four VSU batters. Jeffery Cannon earned the save for the Bears as he pitched two innings, allowing two hits, no runs and recorded a pair of strikeouts.
The Bears scored two runs in the sixth inning and one run in each of the final three innings en route to their second consecutive CIAA baseball title.
