FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Shaw University women’s bowling team finished eighth at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up, hosted by Fayetteville State University this past weekend. Takiya Bennett (Charlotte, NC) led the Lady Bears, finishing seventh overall.
Virginia State finished first overall with a 14-1 record and 13900 total pins, while Bowie State placed second with a 12-3 overall record and 13172 total pins and Elizabeth City State posted a 10-5 record with 11768 total pins for third overall.
Shaw finished the event 5-10 overall and accounted for a total of 1150 pins. Individually, Bennett averaged 175.80 for the weekend including a 194 game against Chowan, a 206 against Bowie State and 202 vs Virginia Union. Omolola Balogun (Charlotte, NC) finished with a pin average of 166.0 good for 10th overall, while Carrie-Lee Farnham (Apex, NC) placed 14th overall with an average of 150.80.
Head Coach Joe Williams’ squad posted a competitive opening day of the event, going 2-3 on Friday to jump into fourth place. Following a loss to the Hawks, the Lady Bulldogs, the Lady Panthers, Shaw rattled off a win over the Trojans of Virginia State (722-718) before falling to Elizabeth City State to conclude day two.
During the baker matches on Sunday, the Lady Bears fell 979-1001 to Bowie State, before beating VUU (751-731) but dropped an 848-930 decision to VSU prior to a victory over ECSU, 861-721. The Lady Bears concluded the final match with a setback to CU, 787-798.
Shaw will return to the lanes on March 4-6 for the CIAA Event III in Elizabeth City, NC.
