Midlothian, Va. – The Bowie State University women’s bowling team finished third overall out of the 11 school field in the Virginia Union University Invitational, which was held Friday, Nov. 20 through Sunday, Nov. 22, at Bowl America Southwest.
The Lady Bulldogs defeated Hampton University (827-796) to open the weekend but lost back-to-back Baker matches to Saint Peter’s University (896-864) and Felician College (916-871) before ending Friday’s matches with a dominating 844-625 victory over host Virginia Union.
Bowie State recorded a 5-1 record on Saturday, defeating Saint Augustine’s (901-715), Livingstone (841-549), Mount Aloysius College (912-899), Virginia State (857-840) and Chowan (827-708). The Lady Bulldogs were edged 921-911 by Valparaiso University to wrap up Saturday’s match play.
In Sunday’s Baker match, the Lady Bulldogs lost back-to-back matches against Valparaiso and Felician by scores of 1084-1004 and 1100-1044 but rebounded to defeat Hampton 974-873 to conclude the weekend.
For the tournament, the Lady Bulldogs totaled 11,555 pins and rolled a 175.1 average.
Valparaiso University defeated Felician College 4-1 to win the VUU Invitational. Bowie State downed Hampton 4-1 for third place, and Mount Aloysius College beat Saint Peter’s University 4-0 for fifth place. Chowan toppled Virginia Union 4-1 for ninth place.
Redshirt sophomore Sierra Davis (Dayton, Ohio) led the Lady Bulldogs with 1,095 total pins and a 182.5 average. Senior Keyandra Bankston (Woodbridge, Va.) ranked second on the team with a 178.3 average (1,070 pins) and a team-best, high-game of 246. Junior Ashley Wade (Richmond, Va.) totaled 1055 pins and a 175.8 average. Freshman Diamond Carter (Buffalo, N.Y.) rolled six traditional games (1,042) and averaged 173.7.
Sophomores Makyra Bankston (Woodbridge, Va.) and Chantel Farlow (Columbia, Md.) also participated for the Lady Bulldogs, averaging 171.7 and 157.3 respectively in three games each.
Bowie State will return to the lanes when they host the Fred and Edwina Underwood Lady Bulldogs Classic – January 15 – 17, 2016 at the AMF Laurel Lanes.
