CIAA Bowling Championship Preview: Featuring Vera Diggs of Bowie State

March 17, 2011

HAMPTON, VA…As the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) prepares for its bowling championships, plans are underway to honor Vera Diggs who bowled a perfect game on February 4 2011. On this opening day of the CIAA round-up, which was hosted by the Lady Bulldogs at the AMF Laurel Lanes, Diggs marked the first time in the history of the CIAA that any bowler has rolled a perfect game.

Vera Diggs Vera Diggs is a senior at Bowie State University, and a native of Ft. Washington, Maryland. Now 21, she started bowling when she was only six years old. Currently, Diggs’ event average is 219.50. When asked about the day that she bowled a perfect game Diggs says, “I had a lot of support that day, everyone came out. It was sunny outside, and it was an all around good day.”

Diggs is very confident about the upcoming championships to be held the weekend of March 19-21 in Durham, North Carolina. She says that she truly believes Bowie State deserves to win. “I’m really looking forward to this year. All of the teams got better and even knowing that, we still have a chance to capitalize. ”

Bowling has always been a fun sport for Diggs. She began playing with family and friends and then realized it was something that she was very good at doing. Although, bowling can be considered a leisurely activity it is also a very serious sport. Bowling a perfect game means that Diggs rolled a strike for every frame, 12 strikes in a row. This is a huge accomplishment.

According to NCAA Secretary/Rule Editor for NCAA Bowling Committee Ron Holmes, this has been done under 10 times since bowling became an NCAA championship sport in the 2003-2004 season.

Diggs is the fifth bowler on her team; serving as the anchor which is a large responsibility. The anchor is considered the best player on the team and is a huge responsibility. Her coach Ken Scott believes that her physical ability and mental knowledge of the game is what makes her stand out from anyone else on the team saying, “She takes the extra step and practices outside of practice time.”  He is also looking forward to the upcoming championship adding that Vera is an overall good person and is, “determined to bring Bowie State the championship along with the rest of her teammates.” It looks like with their confidence, record and a star player like Vera Diggs, the Lady Bulldogs have a good chance at the upcoming championship.
