Bowie State claims second consecutive Bowling Title

(FAYETTEVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA) The CIAA Bowling Championship turned out to be as exciting as everyone thought it would be.  The championship pitted the two divisional conference champions battling out to determine who would be "Queens of the Hill."

The Lady Bulldogs started the Championship Baker Game Round against St. Augustine's College playing the best three out of five games and swept the series 3-0 with scores of 206-126, 202-122, 211-182.  Bowie State then moved on to compete against Virginia State University and captured a 3-1 victory with series winning scores of 179-151, 224-159, 161-168 and 190-157.  Having won those sets, the first opponent on the last day of competition, both coming from the winners bracket, was the number one seed Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos and Bowie State competing as the number two seed.  The Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Broncos fought a tough battle with the BSU Lady Bulldogs coming up the victors, winning the series 3-2 with scores of 179-169, 188-209, 200-226, 213-170, 225-169.  The Lady Broncos loss sent FSU to the losers bracket while BSU maintained their poise in the winners bracket and awaited the winner of the losers bracket to bowl for the championship.  After defeating Virginia State in losers bracket play, the Fayetteville State again faced the Lady Bulldogs in the championship finals.   The Lady Bulldogs clinched the title in relatively easy fashion, defeating Fayetteville State 190-181, 193-186 and 246-190.

The win was the second consecutive CIAA Championship for the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University.  At the end of the day, BSU entered into the pages of history by being the first CIAA team to repeat as CIAA Champions, Eastern Division Champions and winners of the Round-up two years in a row.  Coach Kenneth Scott applauds the individual efforts of his young team.  The 2006-2007 team consisted of Janine Canlas with a match average of 190.1, followed by Victoria Hosgood (185.8 average), Jessica Sites (181 average), team captain Kellye Underwood (179.8 average) and Cassie Williams with a 166.3 average.  Janine was recognized as the Most Valuable Player of the Championship Tournament with the highest average on the winning team.  Coach Scott also noted that Kellye had injured a finger on her bowling hand.  Between match play, she spent her time soaking her finger in ice.  Scott also recognized that the team spirit displayed during this bowling season, contributed to the successful season.  This year, the win was a result of  "total teamwork," said Scott.  Scott went on to say, "Fayetteville State bowlers have nothing to be down about.  They bowled an outstanding game.  I was elated that we finished by winning the championship.  The pins were just falling for us."
