Top Seeds Advance, Upsets Highlight Day One of 2026 CIAA Women’s Bowling Championship

MECHANICSVILLE, Va. (March 20, 2026) – The 2026 CIAA Women’s Bowling Championship opened with intensity and early movement across the bracket as teams took the lanes Friday at Bowlero Bowling in a double elimination mega match format that quickly separated contenders from challengers.

Top seeded Fayetteville State wasted no time setting the tone. The Broncos opened with a 2-0 win over No. 8 Virginia Union, then followed with another 2-0 sweep over No. 4 Bowie State to remain undefeated and firmly in control of the winners bracket. The defending champions continue to look every bit the team to beat as they pursue a fourth consecutive CIAA title.

No. 2 Virginia State also opened strong with a 2-0 win over No. 7 Johnson C. Smith, but day one proved the bracket would not hold to script.

Elizabeth City State emerged as the biggest mover of the day. The No. 6 seed pushed past No. 3 Livingstone in a tightly contested 2-1 match, then returned with another 2-1 victory over Virginia State to advance through the winners bracket. With back to back wins over higher seeded opponents, the Vikings enter day two as the lowest remaining seed still unbeaten and carrying momentum.

Elsewhere, No. 4 Bowie State handled No. 5 Shaw 2-0 in the opening round before dropping into the elimination bracket, where the tournament intensity only increased.

Facing elimination, Shaw responded with urgency, defeating Virginia Union 2-0 to end the Panthers’ tournament run. Livingstone followed with a 2-0 win over Johnson C. Smith, eliminating the Golden Bulls and keeping their championship hopes alive.

By the close of day one, Virginia Union and Johnson C. Smith became the first teams eliminated, while Fayetteville State and Elizabeth City State stood as the final unbeaten teams in the field.

Day two opens with high stakes elimination matches as Shaw faces Bowie State and Livingstone meets Virginia State at 9 a.m., with seasons on the line.

The spotlight then shifts to the winners bracket at 2 p.m., where Fayetteville State and Elizabeth City State will meet with a direct path to the championship at stake. The Broncos aim to continue their dominant run toward a fourth straight title, while the Vikings look to extend their surge after two statement performances on day one.

The championship continues through March 22 as teams battle for the CIAA crown. Select matches are streamed live on the CIAA Sports Network. Fans can follow the championship bracket and watch live at https://theciaasn.com/
