BOWIE, MD (July, 25 2024) - Bowie State University head softball coach
Ed Powell was selected to participate in the MLB Breakthrough Series, a program run through MLB Develops that selects the top 40-50 softball players identified by RBI programs and club charitable affiliates to receive coaching and training from elite softball players and coaches ranging from on-field training and off field guidance.
"I am truly grateful to have been chosen to participate in this year's MLB Breakthrough Series in Kansas City," said Powell. "I'd like to thank Rachel Hubertus and the committee for the invite. I don't take opportunities like this for granted because not only does it provides an opportunity for me professionally but I get the chance to represent my institution, Bowie State University as well as our conference, the CIAA. I look forward to being able to assist with developing these young ladies on the field as well as off during our time together next week."
This year, the event features 32 of the MLBDevelops top softball players from Nike RBI programs and MLB Youth Academies across the country. The Softball Breakthrough Series promotes the sport as a viable collegiate option for youth from underrepresented and underserved communities. The event is free for participants, who are selected by invitation only.
Powell was asked by the MLB Youth Baseball and Softball Development team to join the coaching staff of current and former USA Olympic Softball players to bring expertise from the college lens as well as to bridge the gap for the participants. Additionally, Powell is one of two head coaches (Chelsea Holliday, Bluefield State) to represent from the Central Intercolleigate Athletic Association (CIAA) Conference.
