WINSTON-SALEM, NC (February 12, 2024) - The Fayetteville State University Women and the Claflin University Men once again crowned champions at the 2024 CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track on Monday. Both teams repeat as conference champions.
Claflin University repeats in the men's indoor track & field championship with 131 points. Saint Augustine’s University finished in second place with 102 points and Virginia State University captured third with 99 points.
The Broncos' fourth title run, in its fifth season as a university-sponsored track and field program, tallied 138 points to claim the title. Winston-Salem State University finished as the runner-up with 115 points and Saint Augustine’s University placed third (90.5 points). Fayetteville State's M'Smyra Seward, the Women's Field Athlete of the Year, captured the long jump event(5.89 meters). The Broncos finished well in the lead aided by Irene Jeptoo winning the 1 mile with a time5:13.16, while teammate Nia Gibson came in first place with a time of 10:46.28. Winston-Salem State's Hayleigh Bryant was named Women's Track Athlete of the Year, after claiming the 400-meter title (58.02) and the 200m winning with a time of 24.66.
Claflin won multiple events to claim the conference crown. The Panthers' Jonathan Flemister won the 200-meter dash (21.73 seconds) and Chander Anderson won the 400 meters (48.92) on Monday. Zion Murry repeated as the 800m champion with a time of 1:55.29.
Saint Augustine’s Terrell Robinson was named the Men's Track Athlete of the Year. Robinson won the 60-meter (6.68 seconds). Marcus White was named the Men’s Field Athlete MVP long jump and fifth in the triple jump.
Inez Turner of Fayetteville State was chosen as the CIAA Women's Coach of the Year and Melvin Watts of Claflin was named CIAA Men's Coach of the Year.
