CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Week Six saw some of the CIAA's hottest offenses shine bright, as all five winning teams notched 24+ points. Additionally, all five winning programs were the home team for the second consecutive week.
Winston-Salem def. Shaw, 34-14
A pair of 4-2 teams went head-to-head this weekend, as Winston-Salem State hosted Shaw. The Bears found the endzone late in the second quarter to cut their deficit to one, but the Rams exploded for 27 unanswered points on 513 total yards of offense en route to their fifth victory of the season. The win also marks WSSU's third-straight against the Bears.
Lincoln (PA) def. Bluefield State, 37-14
Lincoln (PA) entered the week in search of their first win and were able to produce one in front of their home crowd, as they took down Bluefield State in a big way. The Big Blue struck first with a three-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter and would hold that lead heading into the second quarter. The tide would turn in a big way, as the Lions went off to the tune of 23 second-quarter points claim the lead. They'd find the endzone twice more in the second half as they cruised to the 23-point victory.
Virginia Union def. Elizabeth City State, 35-0
The reigning champions appear to be back in last season's form, as they won their third consecutive game, shutting out Elizabeth City State while finding the endzone five times. The Panthers held the Vikings to under 200 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers on the defensive side, while rushing for three touchdowns and adding another pair through the air. The victory helped VUU improve to 4-2, while ECSU falls to 2-4, losing their third straight.
Livingstone def. Fayetteville State, 24-19
Livingstone continues to turn heads this season, as they improved to 5-2 after a gritty five-point victory over Fayetteville State. The game was tied at 10 with under two minutes remaining in the first half, but the Blue Bears picked off the Broncos and took it to the house to pull ahead by seven at the half. After another rushing touchdown increased the lead to 14, the Broncos responded with nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull within five but would stall out there, as Livingstone would hold on for the victory. The victory marks the first time the Blue Bears have eclipsed 5+ wins since 2015, which was also the last time they defeated the Broncos.
Virginia State def. Bowie State, 38-17
Virginia State hosted Bowie State this past weekend and were able to get back in the win column with a 21-point win over Bowie State, who dropped their third straight. The Trojans were hot out the gate and found the endzone with 11 seconds remaining in the first half to cap a 24-point first half which also saw them hold the Bulldogs scoreless. Bowie State were able to find the endzone twice in the third quarter but were unable to keep up with VSU's offense, as they'd take the matchup. 38-17.
