CIAA Week #3 Football In Review

CHARLOTTE, NCCIAA football conference play is in full swing, so let’s take a look back at how teams fared in Week #3 and find out what’s on tap in Week #4.
 
Shaw 7 at Bowie State 21
Behind an impressive defensive effort that kept the Shaw ground attack to 72 rushing yards, the Bowie State Bulldogs took down the Bears 21-7 at home Saturday afternoon in its home opener at Bulldog Stadium. The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 on the year and 1-0 in league play, while the Bears fell to 0-3 and 0-1 in the league. Carleton Stewart totaled 55 yards to lead the Bulldogs' ground attack in the game, picking up 6.9 yards per carry along the way while Asa Williams also tacked on 22 yards on the ground, picking up 5.5 yards per carry. James McNeill, III reeled in six catches for 69 yards and two scores while Keshane Hinckley hauled in five balls for 64 yards. Khalil Glover showed out for the Bowie State defense, totaling seven tackles and a half of sack while Devin Williams added six tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, one interception, and two pass breakups and Jadon Carter had one interception in the win. Kahlil Glover led the BSU defense with 5.5 tackles which included 3.5 tackles for a loss and Devin Williams contributed five total tackles. The Shaw Bears were led offensively by Silas Cruse with a game-high 153 passing yards, completing 16-of-34 but was intercepted twice. Shaw’s Sidney Gibbs rushed for a game-high 62 yards and was responsible for the Bears only touchdown of the afternoon. Elijah Adams paced the Shaw defense with a game-high 7.5 tackles.

Virginia State 55 at Saint Augustine’s 12
Virginia State dominated on all three sides of the ball as they defeated St. Augustine's 55-12 to remain undefeated while opening conference play at 1-0. The VSU Trojans rolled up 390 yards of total offense (192 passing and 198 rushing) while holding the SAU Falcons to 180 yards of total offense (120 passing and 60 rushing). VSU’s Steve Williams completed 18-of-34 passes and scored two touchdowns with OBJ Lightbourne was the games’ leading ground gainer with 75 rushing yards. Virginia State’s Roy Jackson III led all receivers with 73 reception yards on three receptions. VSU’s top defenders were Tyrone Fisher with seven total tackles and Alex White along with Willie Drew with six tackles each. Anthony Butler was Saint Augustine’s bright spot on offense with 96 passing yards but was picked off four times. The SAU Falcons (0-3 / 0-1 CIAA) had two double-digit rushers in Chris Coneway and Anthony Archie recording 44 and 20 yards respectively in the loss. SAU’s Jamieson Alston was the games’ top tackler with 11 total (all solo) and one quarterback hurry.

Elizabeth City State 7 at Winston-Salem State 24
Winston-Salem State picked up its first victory of the season after starting 0-2 but what is more important is the Rams opened CIAA play at 1-0 after topping Elizabeth City State 24-7 on Saturday evening. The Rams were led by Daylin Lee’s 132 passing yards and Asa Barnes’ 92 rushing yards on 19 carries. Defensively, Terrel Chance had nine tackles (8 solo) and one assist while teammate Justin Fleming had seven tackles (5 solo) and 2.0 sacks for nine yards. The ECSU Vikings (1-2 / 0-1 CIAA) were led on offense by Chase Williams with a game-high 142 passing yards, completing 10-of-24 and one score. Quinzel Lockhart hauled in a game-high nine receptions for the Vikings for a game-high 121 yards and one touchdown. Defensively, the Vikings were led by Treonne Porter with nine total tackles. In terms of team stats, Elizabeth City State and Winston-Salem State were relatively even with the Vikings accounting for 285 total yards of offense (137 rushing and 148 passing) compared to 245 yards (113 rushing and 132 passing) for the Rams.

Virginia Union 28 at Livingstone 20
Nationally ranked Virginia Union spotted the Livingstone Blue Bears a 13-0 first quarter advantage before responding with 28 unanswered points in quarters two and three and held on in the end to capture a 28-20 road win to remain undefeated at 3-0. This was the conference opener for both teams and was VUU’s third straight road game to start the season. Virginia Union's Rashard Jackson rushed for game-high 185 yards and scored two touchdowns on 32 carries to lead the Panthers offense. The Panthers defense was led by Jah’Ke Hillard with six total tackles which include two tackles for a loss of nine yards. Livingstone quarterback torched the VUU defense with a game-high 314 passing yards, completing 17-of-26 passes, scored three touchdowns but was intercepted four times in the setback. Angel Carrillo led all receivers with 147 reception yards on five receptions (longest of 79) and Matthew Henery posted a game-high nine receptions for 117 yards. Livingstone’s loss sets the team record at 0-3 overall and 0-1 in CIAA play.

Lincoln (PA) 17 at Fayetteville State 20
Fayetteville State acquired its first victory of the season after Jacob Meneses connected on a 40-yard field goal that put the Broncos ahead 20-17 over Lincoln Pa. as time expired. The Broncos improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference while the Lions drop to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the CIAA. FSU’s Jacob Meneses finished the game making 2-of-3 field goals. David Baros hauled in seven receptions for a total of 108 yards and Joe Owens completed 13-of-22 pass attempts for 194 yards and a touchdown. Julian Milligan rushed 11 times for 79 yards for the Broncos and Syheam McQueen carried six times for 79 yards. Theniias Moss led all Broncos with seven tackles while Quran Blount, Brian Grier, and Kolby Merritt followed with six apiece. Isaiah Freeman led the Lincoln (Pa.) effort with 16 of 27 pass attempts for 249 yards and one touchdown. He was sacked three times and threw two interceptions. Amir Gerald ran the ball 17 times for a net 56 yards. Malachi Langley finished with five receptions for 116 yards. Kamaal McMillan racked up a game-high 12 tackles (8 solo and 4 assisted) and forced one fumble. Fayetteville State ended the night with 408 yards of total offense and Lincoln (PA) tallied 325 yards of total offense.

Bluefield State 13 at Johnson C. Smith 30
The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith (2-1 / 1-0 CIAA) held a 20-0 lead by halftime and cruised the rest of the contest to claim a 30-13 home victory against Bluefield State on Saturday evening. The JCSU special teams proved big with three field goals, recovered a fumble and a punt return for a score. Offense was limited for both teams as Bluefield State (1-2 / 0-1 CIAA) recorded 231 yards of total offense (157 passing and 74 rushing). Johnson C. Smith totaled just 200 yards of total offense (153 rushing and 47 passing). Jai’que Hart threw for a game-high 157 yards (22-of-43) for Bluefield State but was sacked three times. Bluefield State’s Jahdi Loftland paced all ground gainers with 73 rushing yards, averaging 8.1 yards per carry and Khyon Smith was the leading receiver for Big Blue hauling in seven receptions for 72 yards, both game-highs. Jarves Scruggs and Eric Tunstall were the leading tacklers for Bluefield State with nine and seven respectively. Johnson C. Smith’s Shydem McCullough was the Golden Bulls top offensive producer with 51 rushing yards (longest of 46). Jackson Smith recorded a game-high 10 tackles for the Golden Bulls and Benari Black was responsible for seven total tackles.
