BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State football student-athlete Justin Zavala has been named to the NCAA Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and will serve on the committee immediately and continue through January 17, 2026.

"I am beyond grateful for this opportunity," said Zavala. "I look forward to representing Bowie State and all of CIAA on the national level!"

A native of Bowie, Md.,  Zavala is a computer technology major and BSU's SAAC Vice President who just completed his second season on the field as a redshirt sophomore and the Bulldogs lone kicker and punter.

"Bowie State University is so very proud of football student-athlete Justin Zavala, on being selected to serve on the NCAA National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC)," said Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Clyde Doughty, Jr. "Throughout his tenure as Vice President of our campus SAAC he has exhibited strong leadership qualities supporting his fellow student-athletes, constantly encouraging them to think outside of themselves to strive for greatness in the classroom and on the field of competition.  I look forward to working with Justin and the National SAAC as the D2 membership continues to make D2 the best division in the association."

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) serves as the primary governance arm representing student-athlete interests in Division II affairs. SAAC members serve as student-athlete liaisons that monitor and discuss happenings on campuses, within conferences, and at the national level.

Representatives are responsible for gathering feedback and reporting on behalf of their conference, as well as relaying important events, hot topics, and educational information to both the campus and conference levels. In addition to relaying information across campuses and conferences, the committee speaks on behalf of the entire Division II student-athlete body throughout the NCAA governance structure.

Division II SAAC members serve as voting members on a number of Division II committees, including the Management Council. The SAAC also has voting authority during the Division II Business Session at the annual NCAA Convention.
