Charlotte, NC- With regular season play concluding the bracket for the 2023 CIAA Women's Tennis Championship has been set and will take place April 21-22 on the campus of Virginia State University. First round tournament action begins Friday, April 21, at the Virginia State University Tennis Complex. Advancing teams will compete in the semi-finals on Friday, April 21, with the championship concluding on Saturday, April 22. The tournament is free and open to the public.

The match format will consist of three doubles followed by six singles (3-6 format).
The top eight teams from the Northern and Southern division qualify based on their regular season overall conference record. Top-seed Shaw University (10-5, 9-1) is on the hunt for its fifth straight title and take on No.8 seed Elizabeth State University (0-10, 0-10), followed by No 4. Winston-Salem State (11-6, 8-3) who will look to top No. 5 Bowie State University (8-6, 6-4). Next up, No. 3 Johnson C. Smith (6-9, 6-4) will line up against No. 6 Elizabeth City State University (3-7, 3-6), with host and No. 2 seed Virginia State (11-3, 9-1) facing off against No. 7 Virginia Union University (2-8, 2-8). Opening round games will begin at 10:00 a.m. (ET). Matches begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the previous match.
Teams advancing to the semi-final rounds will begin play on Friday April 21, 2023 at 6pm (ET). Finals action is slated for 9:30am ET on Saturday, April 22nd, with the awards ceremony immediately following the last match. The winner will represent the CIAA in the NCAA regional, with the NCAA DII finals taking place at the USTA National Campus on May 11-27, in Orlando, Florida.
The CIAA Women's Tennis Championship dates back to 2001. Shaw University has won 11 of the 17 championship titles including the last four consecutive years. Fayetteville State captured five of the first six titles, is last in 2007.
