CIAA Week #6 Football in Review

CHARLOTTE, NCCIAA divisional play began in Week #6 … Here’s a snapshot of what went down, and we also take a look ahead to the schedule for Week #7.
 
Virginia Union 42 (5-1 / 3-1 CIAA / 1-0 North) at Elizabeth City State 20 (1-5 / 0- 4 CIAA / 0-1 North)
Virginia Union's Jada Byers rushed for a game-high 246 yards and scored two touchdowns, helping the Panthers roll past Elizabeth City State 42-20. VUU, which leads the nation in rushing defense, allowed only 10 rushing yards and intercepted four passes. Virginia Union finished the game with 397 yards of total offense. The ECSU Vikings were led by quarterback Donoven Davenport with a game and personal season-high 301 passing yards, completing 20-of-40 passes and three touchdowns. However, Davenport was intercepted four times and sacked four times. Elizabeth City State’s Quinzel Lockhart led all receivers with 175 reception yards on nine catches, both season-highs. Defensively, ECSU was led in tackles by Dev’on Grant with a game-high 11 tackles while VUU’s Shamar Graham paced the Panthers with a team-high eight tackles.

Johnson C. Smith 10 (4-2 / 3-1 CIAA / 0-1 South) at Shaw 21 (2-4 / 2-2 CIAA / 1-0 South)
Shaw pulled off an impressive comeback Saturday afternoon, highlighted by a 51-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Blake to Navarreo Rorie, to erase a 10-0 halftime deficit in a 21-10 Homecoming Day win over Johnson C. Smith at Durham County Stadium. Blake led Shaw's passing attack with 188 yards through the air, tossing two touchdowns and one interception. Elijah Adams showed out for the Shaw defense, collecting eight tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, one interception, and one recovered fumble. Saevion Gibbs added five tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, and two sacks and Brian Patterson had five tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and one recovered fumble in the win. The JCSU loss snapped a three-game winning streak by the Golden Bulls. Johnson C. Smith’s offense was limited to 184 yards of total offense (117 rushing and 67 passing). The leaders of the Golden Bulls offense were Robert Adams (67 passing yards), Tim Newman (51 rushing yards) and Brevin Caldwell (38 reception yards).

Fayetteville State 7 (4-2 / 4-0 CIAA / 1-0 South) at Saint Augustine’s 0 (0-6 / 0-4 CIAA / 0-1 South)
The Saint Augustine's defense put up its best showing of the season but was unable to put any points on the scoreboard as Fayetteville State knocked off the Falcons 7-0 on Homecoming. The only points of the game occurred at the 5:05 mark of the third quarter on a Demari Daniels 16-yard touchdown pass to Nigel Fitzgerald and Fayetteville State’s Jacob Meneses added the extra point to account for all the points. Derrick Alston Jr. totaled 75 yards to lead the Broncos' ground attack in the game, picking up 4.7 yards per carry along the way. Demari Daniels' main target in the ballgame was Barry Elliott, who caught five passes for 63 yards. Dylan Morris paced the Fayetteville State defensive effort, recording 8 tackles (6 solo) and 1.0 TFL in the win. Anthony Butler led the SAU Falcons on offense with 141 passing yards and were led on the defensive side of the ball by Jamieson Alston’s 12 total tackles, which included 1.5 tackles for a loss and Adam Aiken added nine total tackles for Saint Augustine’s.

Livingstone 23 (2-4 / 2-2 CIAA / 1-0 South) at Winston-Salem State 21 (2-4 / 2-2 CIAA / 0-1 South)
Livingstone kicker Jason Zapata was the hero of the game, booting a 44-yard field goal with just 27 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Blue Bears past the Rams of Winston-Salem State. Livingstone held a 17-0 advantage at one point during the contest before Winston-Salem State gained its first lead at 21-17 at the 9:19 mark of the final quarter of action. Fortunately for the LC Blue Bears, Zapata trimmed the Rams lead down to 21-20 with 4:29 left in the fourth quarter following a 39-yard field goal, capping off a 10-play, 39-yard drive. The win marked the second straight win for Livingstone this season. Dymere Edwards led Livingstone’s offense with 218 passing yards, completing 19-of-32 passes. Devontay Deloatch was the leading Blue Bears and games leading receiver with 110 reception yards on 11 catches. Winston-Salem State was led offensively by Daylin Lee’s 129 passing yards, completing 11-of-23 passes, but was intercepted twice and sacked twice.

Virginia State 44 (6-0 / 4-0 CIAA / 1-0 North) at Bowie State 16 (3-3 / 2-2 CIAA / 0-1 North)
This game started off with Bowie State returning the opening kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown, but the extra point try was unsuccessful and returned 98 yards for a Virginia State defensive score. From there, it appeared the Trojans and Bulldogs would take on a very familiar theme. However, Virginia State put together three straight, 50 plus yard scoring plays to shift the advantage over the Trojans for good. VSU scored on a 57-yard punt return, and back-to-back TD runs of 75 and 65 yards respectively to take the excitement out of Bowie State’s Homecoming crowd. Virginia State’s Kymani Clark was Bowie State’s biggest thorn in the side, rushing for Trojans season-bests 224 rushing yards on 21 carries, averaging 11.1 yards per carry and scored four touchdowns. Virginia State’s defense was paced by Miqueal Pillow-Smiley with a team-high eight total tackles which included two tackles for a loss. Quarterback Khalif Welch led Bowie State on offense with 110 passing yards in his first start of the season under center. BSU’s Keshane Hinkley led all receivers with a game-high 51 yards on six catches.

Lincoln (PA) 52 (3-3 / 2-2 CIAA / 1-0 North) at Bluefield State 44 (1-5 / 0-4 CIAA / 0-1 North)
Bluefield State’s Big Blue scored a season-high 44 points, but it wasn’t enough, falling short to the visiting Lincoln (PA) Lions. Both teams combined for a whopping 987 yards of total offense, 516 for Lincoln (PA) and 471 for Bluefield State. Each quarterback put up blistering numbers as BSU’s Isaiah Teal threw for a team season-high 442 passing yards and LUPA’s Isaiah Freeman completed 23-of-32 passes for a team and season-high 370 passing yards. Bluefield State had two receivers top 100 yards as Perry Wilder recorded 116 reception yards and Darius Thompson accounting for 115 reception yards. The top receiver for Lincoln (PA) was Malachi Langley with 180 reception yards. Lincoln (PA) dominated time of possession, holding a 38:49 to 21:11 advantage over Bluefield State.
