CIAA Week #7 in Review

CHARLOTTE, NCWeek #7 results went pretty much as expected as five of the six home teams came away with victories … Here’s a snapshot of what happened, and we also look ahead at the schedule for Week #8.
 
Elizabeth City State 21 (1-6 / 0-5 CIAA / 0-2 North) at Lincoln (PA) 27 (3-3 / 2-2 CIAA / 2-0 North)
Elizabeth City State jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead before Lincoln (PA) ran off 21 unanswered points and held on down the stretch to secure a 27-21 Homecoming victory on Saturday afternoon. LUPA’s Isaiah Freeman threw for over 200 yards for the sixth time this season, this time for 210passing yards, completing 13-of-20 passes and three touchdowns. Freeman was also second on the team in rushing with 50 yards. Amir Gerald was the leading rusher for the Lions with 99 yards on 12 carries. The Lincoln (PA) Lions leading receiver was Zyaire Tart with 70 yards on just one reception. Elizabeth City State’s Zechariah Adams-Duckson led both teams in rushing with a game-high 183 yards on 27 carries. Donoven Davenport passed for 78 yards and Quinzel Lockhart was the Vikings only receiver to catch a pass, finishing the game with 78 reception yards.

Saint Augustine’s 6 (0-7 / 0-5 CIAA / 0-2 South) at Johnson C. Smith 14 (5-2 / 4-1 CIAA / 1-1 South)
Led by a dominant defensive effort, Johnson C. Smith did just enough in the first 30 minutes of action on a Homecoming Saturday as the Golden Bulls edged the winless Saint Augustine’s Falcons 14-6. Both teams struggled on offense and combined for 372 yards of total offense. Johnson C. Smith managed 179 yards (124 passing and 55 rushing) while Saint Augustine’s compiled 193 total yards (131 passing and 62 rushing). Saint Augustine’s Marquise Munoz paced the Falcons with 55 rushing yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry. Mekhi Hague was SAU’s and the games’ top receiver with 53 reception yards. Saint Augustine’s quarterback Anthony Butler completed 16-of-34 passes for 122 yards. Lee Sales and Jamieson Alston were the Falcons leading tacklers with 11 and 10 tackles respectively. JCSU quarterback Robert Adams completed 13-of-16 passes for 124 yards and Tim Newman Jr. rushed for a team-high 24 yards. Reggie Bryant paced the Golden Bulls receivers with 47 reception yards on five receptions. Benari Black was JCSU’s leading tackler with seven (4 solo and 3 assisted) while Jack Smith and Steny Jospeh contributed five tackles each in the win.

Bowie State 3 (3-4 / 2-3 CIAA / 2-3 North) at Virginia Union 52 (6-1 / 4-1 CIAA / 2-0 North)
Virginia Union University's Jada Byers rushed for 223 yards (11.7 yards per carry) and two touchdowns as the Panthers defeated Bowie State in record-setting fashion 52-3 on Saturday at Hovey Stadium in Richmond, Va. The 52 points were the most points Virginia Union scored against Bowie State, bettering the previous record of 48 points set in 2000. The VUU Panthers rolled up 458 yards of total offense compared to a season-low 138 total yards of total offense for the BSU Bulldogs. In addition to Byers’ yardage, VUU quarterback Christian Reid threw for a game-high 127 passing yards, completing 6-of-14 passes and two touchdowns. Virginia Union’s Said Sidibe led all receivers with 78 reception yards. Corey Johnson was Bowie State’s leader on offense with 80 rushing yards on a game-high 22 rushing attempts.

Winston-Salem State 41 (3-4 / 3-2 CIAA / 1-1 South) at Shaw 20 (2-5 / 2-3 CIAA / 1-1 South)
The Winston-Salem State Rams earned their road victory of the season after defeating Shaw University 41-20 on Bradshaw Field in Durham County Memorial Stadium spoiling Homecoming for the Shaw Bears. Shaw scored on the games’ opening possession, but the visiting Rams ran off 34 consecutive points to provide all the cushion Winston-Salem State would need. WSSU quarterback Daylin Lee tallied 195 passing yards (three TD’s) and running back Gabriel Linen accumulated a game-high 161 rushing yards. Shaw’s Silas Cruse had a good day as well, recording 192 passing yards and a pair of touchdown passes. The leading receiver for Shaw was Donte Lee Jr. with 68 reception yards. Defensively, the Shaw Bears were led by Akeythio Carson and Elijah Adams with eight tackles apiece followed by Jamyson Boyd with six total tackles. WSSU’s top tacklers were Camar Kyle and Carlos Craig with seven and five tackles respectively. In terms of team stats, Winston-Salem State held advantages in first downs (25-13), total offense (451-290) and time of possession (35:16 to 24:44).

Bluefield State 23 (1-5 / 1-4 CIAA / 0-2 North) at Virginia State 39 (7-0 / 5-0 CIAA / 2-0 North)
Virginia State continued their steady play on a rainy Homecoming afternoon, cruising to a 39-23 victory over Bluefield State. After the Trojans stopped Bluefield State on the game's opening drive, Virginia State went up 12-0 on back-to-back possessions and were never really threatened for the duration of the game. The league leading Trojans were led offensively by quarterback Jordan Davis with 208 passing yards, completing 14-of-24 passes but was sacked four times. Tylique Ray led VSU with 66 reception yards on three catches with his longest being 41 yards. Leading Virginia State ground gainers were Kymani Clarke and Kemari Eberhardt with 45 and 43 rushing yards respectively, Bluefield State’s Big Blue were led by quarterback Isiah Teal’s 127 passing yards. Other Bluefield State offensive leaders were Jahdir Loftland with 78 rushing yards and Khyon Smith with 68 reception yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Bluefield State was paced by TJ Gunter with a game-high 11 total tackles which included 2.5 tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks. The VSU Trojans defense was led by Cameron Davis with eight tackles.

Livingstone 14 (2-5 / 2-4 CIAA / 1-1 South) at Fayetteville State 19 (5-2 / 5-0 CIAA / 2-0 South)
Fayetteville State has been no stranger to late-game heroics during the 2023 season as the Broncos put together a five-play, 71-yard drive, culminating in a 41-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Demari Daniels with 4:09 left in the ballgame to give FSU a 19-14 win over Livingstone on Saturday afternoon. Daniels was FSU’s leading offensive player with 173 total yards (60 rushing yards and 113 passing yards). The Broncos receivers were led by Treveran Goode with 74 yards, with his longest reception being 50 yards that resulted in a touchdown. FSU’s defense was led by Elijah Casey with eight total tackles (6 solo and 2 assisted) and Tyren Belcher with six tackles, all solo. Marcus Drish continues his steady play, leading the Livingstone Blue Bears with 155 passing yards and one touchdown. LC’s Mathew Henry led all receivers with game-highs of 82 reception yards and seven receptions. Livingstone’s defense was led by Terrence McPherson Jr. with eight total tackles while teammate Jaden Echols contributed seven tackles in the setback.
