CIAA Week #5 Football Review

CHARLOTTE, NCWeek #5 wrapped up CIAA Football cross division play and featured a couple of stunning victories … Here’s a snapshot of what occurred in Week #4 and take a look ahead as the very important divisional play gets underway.
 
Johnson C. Smith 21 (4-1 / 3-0 CIAA) at Elizabeth City State 20 (1-4 / 0- 3 CIAA)
The visiting Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith ran off 21 unanswered points, rallying to spoil the Homecoming festivities of Elizabeth City State and edged the Vikings 21-20. JCSU was led offensively by quarterback Robert Adams with 125 passing yards, completing 11-of-19. Adams main target on the afternoon was Brevin Caldwell, tying for game-high reception honors with six for 88 yards. Defensively, the Golden Bulls were led by Benari Black and his game-high 14 tackles. Elizabeth City State was paced by their quarterback Donoven Davenport with a game-high 128 passing yards and one touchdown. ECSU’s Zechariah Adams-Duckson led all rushers with 60 yards on 16 carries and Donovan Davenport contributed 46 rushing yards and one touchdown in the loss.

Virginia State 38 (5-0 / 3-0 CIAA) at Shaw 19 (1-4 / 1-2 CIAA)
Shaw dug a 28-6 first half deficit for themselves and never recovered keeping Virginia State unbeaten on the season. The VSU Trojans ground out 118 total rushing yards behind seven different ball carriers. Much of the offense came on the arm of quarterback Jordan Davis, throwing for a game-high 310 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted twice. Virginia State’s Lucas Nunez led all receivers with a game-high 112 reception yards on just three catches with his longest being 75 yards. Shaw’s Bears were paced on offense by Patrick Blake, Ah’shaan Belcher and Sidney Gibbs. Blake completed 12-of-20 passes for 120 yards, one touchdown but was sacked six times. Belcher hauled in five passes for 99 yards and Gibbs was responsible for 84 rushing yards on 10 carries. The real highlight for Shaw was Kicker India Pulphus connecting on her extra point attempt late in the fourth quarter to make history as the first female kicker to kick an extra point in Shaw football and CIAA football history.

Fayetteville State 28 (3-2 / 3-0 CIAA) at Bluefield State 18 (1-4 / 1-3 CIAA)
Fayetteville State’s defense was quite stingy on Saturday afternoon at Bluefield State, holding Big Blue to just 64 rushing yards.  Bryce Council totaled 65 yards to lead the Broncos' ground attack in the game, picking up 10.8 yards per carry along the way. Derrick Alston Jr. also tacked on 42 yards on the ground and caught two passes for 17 yards. Dylan Morris led the Fayetteville State defensive effort, recording five tackles, 0.5 TFL, and one interception. Beni Mukulu added one recovered fumble and Brian Grier had three tackles, 2.0 TFL, and two sacks in the win. The Bluefield State offense was led by Isiah Tate with 337 passing yards and two touchdowns but was sacked four times. Darius Thompson hauled in a game-high six receptions for Bluefield State for a game-high 64 reception yards. Jahdir Loftland was Big Blue’s leading rusher with 59 yards on 22 carries. Bluefield State’s defense was led by Brett Brantley with six tackles while Corey Watkins and Justin Campbell added five tackles each.

Virginia Union 47 (4-1 / 2-1 CIAA) at Saint Augustine’s 7 (0-5 / 0-3 CIAA)
Nationally ranked (#24) Virginia Union got back to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon on the road at Saint Augustine’s, bulldozing over the Falcons 47-7. VUU's Curtis Allen rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the win. The 151 yards marked the second straight game which Allen has rushed for 150 or more yards. Virginia Unions defense held the Falcons to minus 24 yards rushing with the Panthers’ Armonii Burden getting six tackles and three quarterback hurries while teammate Isaiah Dickens had six tackles and two quarterback hurries. The bulk of the Saint Augustine’s offense came courtesy of quarterback Anthony Butler’s 150 passing yards with his longest being 74 yards. The Saint Augustine’s defense was quite busy all afternoon and was led by Jameison Alston and Lee Sales with six tackles apiece. There was a bright spot for the SAU defense as Booker Peaks returned a Virginia Union fumble 76 yards for the Falcons on points of the contest.

Winston-Salem State (27 (2-3 / 2-1 CIAA) at Lincoln (PA) 30 (2-3 / 1-2 CIAA)
A late game 7-play, 39-yard drive by Lincoln (Pa.) helped lift the Lions to an exciting 30-27 come from behind victory over visiting Winston-Salem State. LUPA quarterback Isaiah Freeman connected on a short 8-yard pass to Dah’mear Triplett with 15 seconds left in the game and Amir Gerald’s two-point conversion accounting for the final margin. Freeman finished the game with a game-high 278 passing yards and three touchdowns to go along with a game-high 153 rushing yards and one score. Triplett was the games’ top receiver with 128 reception yards on four catches. The LUPA Lions dominated the clock, holding a 37:36 to 22:24 advantage over the Winston-Salem State Rams. Lincoln (PA) also held advantages in first downs (24 to 13) and total offensive yards (481 to 250). WSSU’s Daylin Lee completed 10-of 18 passes for 116 yards but was sacked four times. Asa Barnes paced the Rams on the ground with 104 rushing yards and one touchdown and teammate R.J. Mobley was Winston-Salem State’s leading receiver with 66 yards on three receptions and two touchdowns.

Bowie State 18 (3-2 / 2-1 CIAA) at Livingstone 31 (1-4 / 1-2 CIAA)
Bowie State posted 354 yards in total offense but seven fumbles including four losses and 10 penalties proved to be too much to overcome in the Bulldogs 31-18 to a no-longer winless Livingstone team on the road Saturday afternoon at Alumni Memorial Stadium. Amir Jenkins led Bowie State's passing attack with 286 yards through the air, tossing one touchdown and one interception. Corey Johnson totaled 66 yards to lead the Bulldogs' ground attack in the game, picking up 6.6 yards per carry along the way. Carleton Stewart also tacked on 35 yards and one touchdown on the ground. Shawan Lewis led the defense with seven tackles, 2.5 tackle for loss and a .5 sack while Cameron Chesley, Mychale Salahuddin and Hasan Mosley all finished with five tackles each. Livingstone quarterback Marcus Drish threw for 224 passing yards and four touchdowns with Matthew Henery recording game-highs of eight receptions and 130 reception yards. The Fighting Blue Bears defensive charge was paced by Jaden Echols with a game-high 12 tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss, one forced fumble and one pass breakup.
