CIAA Volleyball Round-Up Report #1

CHARLOTTE, NC — Last weekend, all 12 member institutions of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) assembled at Bowie State University for the first CIAA Volleyball Round-Up of the 2022 season. 18 conference matches featuring all 12 schools were played across Saturday and Sunday in the McKeldin Gymnasium and A.C. Jordan Arena.

Let's take a look at the results of the first round-up:

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th
 Fayetteville State 3, Lincoln (PA) 1
After the Lions grabbed the first set, 25-19, the Broncos took three straight sets for the victory. Fayetteville State's Xiamana Spikes and Kailyn Williams had a game-high 11 kills and Kyra Webb had 20 assists. Lincoln was led by Janaa Smith's 14 assists and Erica Taylor's nine kills.
Saint Augustine's 3, Bowie State 2
Bowie State won the first two sets by a score of 25-23 but the Falcons roared back to force a decisive fifth set, which went in St. Aug's favor, 15-12. The Bulldogs' Jailyn Ivey had a game-high 16 kills, followed by the Falcons' Fesili Moore (14) and Madison Jones (13). Sydney Moore had 34 assists for St. Aug and Bowie State's Lindsey Grossman had 28. 
Virginia Union 3, Winston-Salem State 2
Winston-Salem State had a 2-0 lead and was one set away from the win but the Panthers clawed their way back and won the fifth set, 15-10. Winston-Salem State's Breanna Young had a game-high 15.5 points (13 kills and five block assists) and the Panthers' Aireanna Johnson had a team-high 14 points with 11 kills and three aces. Virginia Union's Ashlee Franklin led the team with 22 assists and 11 digs. Jericka Brodie's 16 digs for the Rams were a game-high.
Virginia State 3, Livingstone 0
The Blue Bears fought valiantly to try to force a fourth set as they led 24-23 in the third set but Virginia State earned three straight kills for the win. Emma Quarles led the Trojans with 15 assists and Makayla Berry led with 14 digs. For Livingstone, Taylor Grant's six kills were enough for the team-high and Virginia State was led by Amaya Cooper and her eight kills.
Shaw 3, Johnson C. Smith 1
Johnson C. Smith grabbed the third set in a competive back-and-forth but Shaw raced away with the other three sets. Shaw's Mallory Brown (15) and Kamille Patrick (12) were the two players who topped double-digit in kills and Breelyn Clark had 43 (!!) assists. The Golden Bulls' Keyana Brown had a game-high 24 digs and Monique Reid had 12. Kaylin Evans' 18 digs led the Bears.
Elizabeth City State 3, Claflin 0
After racing out to a 6-0 record, Claflin lost its first match of the season. The first two sets were especially competitive but fortune was in the Vikings' favor. Elizabeth Kellum had a volleyball triple-double for ECSU with 15 assists, 14 kills, and 12 digs. The Vikings' Kayleigh Sullivan had a game-high 27 assists. For Claflin, Jasmine Kirkland had a game-high 20 digs and Erin Preston had a team-high 14 assists.
Virginia Union 3, Saint Augustine's 0
Virginia Union made quick work of the Falcons in this sweep. The Panthers had a 15-3 advantage in service aces, led by Essence Poteat's six aces. Amilex Lopez-Ayala (11) and Aireanna Johnson (10) had double-digit kills for Virginia Union. The Panthers' Maysun Creery had a game-high 12 digs. For St. Aug, Sydney Moore led the team with 14 assists and nine digs. 
Fayetteville State 3, Virginia State 1
After Fayetteville State took the first two sets, Virginia State forced a fourth and the Broncos won the competitive set to eliminate the need for a fifth set. Jaida Bynum and Kyra Webb combined for 31 assists for FSU. Bronco Jordan Johnson had a game-high 23 digs. Virginia State's Najlaa Williams had a team-high 12 digs and four different Trojans had a team-high six kills.
Elizabeth City State 3, Livingstone 0
The second set proved most competitive as the Vikings took the first and third sets by a combined score of 50-22. Elizabeth City State's Victoria White and Livingstone's Doris Ajagbe each had six kills, which is a game-high. Elizabeth Kellum from ECSU had a game-high 12 assists and Naijya Leggett had 10 digs. For the Blue Bears, Ja'Nya Lunnerman tallied a game-high 13 digs.
Shaw 3, Winston-Salem State 1
Shaw took the first two sets before dropping third and then recovering to win the fourth. Shaw's Noelani Beard (14) and Khamare Steppe (11) topped double-digits in kills. Breelyn Clark led the Bears with 34 kills and 11 digs. For the Rams, Sanaa Lanier had seven kills, a team-high. Winston-Salem State's Myra Wallace had a game-high 13 digs.
 
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th
Claflin 3, Lincoln (PA) 0
Claflin recovered from Saturday's sweep with a sweep of their own on Sunday. Simone Newell led the way with 10 kills, four aces, plus she added 10 digs for the Panthers. Claflin's Jasmine Kirkland had a team-high 14 digs and Erin Preston had 14. For Lincoln (PA), Jada Lumpkin had a game-high 15 assists and Erica Taylor added 12 digs.
Bowie State 3, Johnson C. Smith 1
The first set was the most competitive with Bowie State winning 26-24 en route to taking the second and fourth sets, as well. The Bulldogs were led by Kendal Hoges' 20.5 points (13 kills, 5 solo blocks, 3 block assists). Lindsey Grossman had a team-high 26 assists and was second on Bowie State with 12 digs and 11 kills. JCSU's Anya Valentine had a team-high 12 kills and Yasmine Cannon had a team-high 17 assists. The Golden Bulls' Monique Reid had 17 digs, a game-high, plus 13 assists.
Elizabeth City State 3, Fayetteville State 0
Fayetteville State had set point in the first set before the Vikings grabbed three straight points for the win. The third set was all ECSU, making quick work of the Broncos. Elizabeth Kellum's eight kills for ECSU were a game-high and she was second on the team with 14 assists. The Vikings' Kayleigh Sullivan led with 15 assists and Naijya Leggett's 13 digs were a team-high. For the Broncos, Jordan Johnson's 21 digs and Jaida Bynum's 15 assists were game-highs. 
Shaw 3, Saint Augustine's 0
It was three very quick sets for a Shaw sweep as the Bears outpaced the Falcons in kills, 37-8 and in aces, 20-4. Breelyn Clark led Shaw with 29 assists as Mallory Brown (10) and Noelani Beard (7) combined for 17 kills. Beard also added eight aces and a team-high 12 digs. For the Falcons, Syndey Moore's six digs and four assists led the team.
Virginia Union 3, Johnson C. Smith 0
The first two sets were very back-and-forth and the match could have went in a different direction if Virginia Union had not won the second set, 26-24. The Panthers' Jade Lane had a game-high 12 kills, followed by the Golden Bulls' Daivez Bell with 11. Yasmine Cannon for JCSU had a game-high 21 assists and VUU's Ashlee Franklin had 17. Maysun Creery led the Panthers with 12 digs and eight aces.
Virginia State 3, Claflin 0
Claflin almost forced a fourth set but with Virginia State trailing 24-21, the Trojans reeled off five straight points for the set win and the sweep. Leyla Conley led Virginia State with 11 kills and Claflin's leader was Simone Newell with nine. The Trojans' Emma Quarles (19) was the game's assist leader and Makayla Berry (17) and Najlaa Williams (16) combined for 33 digs. For Claflin, Jasmine Kirkland had a team-high 15 digs and Newell added 13.
Bowie State 3, Winston-Salem State 2
Winston-Salem State grabbed the first and fourth sets but consecutive kills from the Bulldogs' Kyznia Jessup clinched the victory for Bowie State. The Rams had a 13-5 advantage in blocks but Bowie State had a 54-41 edge in kills. Lindsey Grossman (16), Jessup (15), and Jailyn Ivey (13) combined for 41 kills for the Bulldogs. Additionally, Grossman had a game-high 31 assists and Neysha Washington's 27 digs were also a game-high. Sanaa Lanier led the Rams with 11 kills and Breanna Young had seven total blocks, along with six kills. WSSU's Myra Wallace had a team-high 23 digs and Brooke Norwood had 22 assists.
Lincoln 3, Livingstone 0
Lincoln picked up its first win of the round-up behind Hailey Loper's 11 kills and Jaida Lumpkin's five aces. Lumpkin also had a team-high 17 assists and her teammate Mariah Webster contributed 17 digs. Livingstone's Doris Ajagbe and her six kills were enough for the team-high and Dekiya Wilson-Thomas added nine assists.


The CIAA conducts up to two volleyball round-ups a season. Shaw and Saint Augustine’s in Raleigh, N.C. will be hosting the second CIAA Volleyball Round-Up on Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9.

These round-ups are instrumental tune-ups in advance of the 2022 CIAA Volleyball Tournament, which is slated for November 8-12th at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, VA.
