CIAA Volleyball Round-Up Report #2

CHARLOTTE, NC — Last weekend, all 12 member institutions of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) assembled at Saint Augustine's University and Shaw University for the second and final CIAA Volleyball Round-Up of the 2022 season. 18 conference matches featuring all 12 schools were played across Saturday and Sunday in the Bears' Spaulding Gymnasium and the Falcons' Emery Gymnasium.

Let's take a look at the results of the second round-up:

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8
 Shaw 3, Fayetteville State 0
Shaw made very quick work of the Broncos in the Bears' Spaulding Gymnasium with Noelani Beard recording 17 kills, Breelyn Clark logging 30 assists, and Mallory Brown adding six service aces. Xiamana Spikes led FSU with six kills and Kyra Webb led with 15 assists.
Virginia Union 3, Livingstone 0
After a closely contested first set (26-24), Virginia Union had more ease with the second and third sets (25-16) to complete the sweep. Amilex Lopez-Ayala had a game-high 12 kills for the Panthers and Ashlee Franklin led Virginia Union in assists (nine) and aces (six). Dekiya Wilson-Thomas led Livingstone in digs (six), aces (five), and assists (five).
Winston-Salem State 3, Virginia State 1
The first and third sets (25-21) were very competitive in favor of the Rams. The second set (25-10) was all Virginia State and the fourth set (25-19) was all Winston-Salem State before the Trojans went on a late 9-1 run but a Rheign Davis kill sealed the game. Davis led WSSU with 15 kills and Myra Wallace had a team-high 26 digs and four aces. The Trojans' Najlaa Williams logged a game-high 31 digs and Emma Quarles' 17 assists were also a game-high.
Johnson C. Smith 3, Lincoln (PA) 0
The second set was the most competitive (25-23) with Lincoln actually leading 23-22 but the Golden Bulls took the set and then ran away with the third set (25-14) for the sweep. For JCSU, Yasmine Cannon's 29 assists and Monique Reid's 16 digs were both game-highs. Lincoln's Haley Loper led the team with nine kills and six blocks.
Claflin 3, Bowie State 1
Bowie State avoided the sweep by winning the third set (25-17) but Claflin won the other sets rather comfortably. Simone Newell led the Panthers with nine kills, seven digs, and seven aces. However, it was Bowie State's Jailyn Ivey that registered the game-high in kills (11) and aces (8).
Shaw 3, Livingstone 0
Shaw earned another very quick sweep with Ilani Myers logging a game-high 10 kills and Anna Ney earning 24 assists for the Bears. Livingstone's Ja'Nya Lunnerman and her six digs were a team-high.
Elizabeth City State 3, Winston-Salem State 1
The first set was tied at 20-20 before the Vikings pulled away for the set win, 25-22. After Elizabeth City State also grabbed the second set (25-23), the Vikings nearly completed the sweep before three straight Winston-Salem State points sealed the set for the Rams, 26-24. There was no drama whatsoever in the fourth set (25-9) for the Vikings. ECSU's Victoria White (13), Elizabeth Kellum (10), and WSSU's Breonna Young (10) topped double-digits in kills. Kellum was also second on the team with 17 assists, behind only Kayleigh Sullivan's 20 assists. Naijya Leggett had 20 digs, a game-high for the Vikings and Paris Joyner led the Rams with 13.
Virginia State 3, Johnson C. Smith 0
The second and third sets were insanely competitive (27-25) but the Trojans grabbed both for the sweep. Johnson C. Smith had set point in the second but Virginia State ended up taking the second set by a Helena Eubanks kill. In the third set, the Trojans trailed early on (7-1) and late (23-20) but a 7-2 run earned Virginia State the sweep. Eubanks had a game-high 14 kills. Virginia State's Emma Quarles' 17 assists and Najlaa Williams' 19 digs were team-highs. For the Golden Bulls, Daivez Bell and Camri Goodwin each had 10 kills, Yasmine Cannon had a game-high 22 assists, and Monique Reid had 21 digs.
Elizabeth City State 3, St. Augustine's 1
Virginia Union 3, Claflin 0
 
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9th
Fayetteville State 3, Bowie State 2
Fayetteville State and Bowie State alternated sets with the Broncos taking the first (25-21), third (25-15), and fifth (15-11) for the win. FSU led the final set 11-10 before a game-clinching 4-1 run. The Bulldogs had two players top double-digits in kills: Jailyn Ivey (17) and Lindsey Grossman (12). Grossman's 18 assists were a team-high and Neysha Washington had a team-high 17 digs. For FSU, Xiamana Spikes and A'Lexus Everett led the team with eight kills and four blocks each. Spikes also had four aces and Kyra Webb logged a game-high 19 assists.
St. Augustine's 3, Lincoln (PA) 0
Lincoln nearly took the first set but the Falcons closed out the set on an 8-1 run to win 27-25. St. Augustine's eliminated any drama over the next two sets for the sweep. Fesili Masaniai had 11 kills for St. Aug and Kya Otis added 10 kills. Falcon Sydney Moore led the team with 25 assists and five digs. For the Lions, Haley Loper led the team with nine kills and Janaa Smith had 17 assists and six aces, both team-highs.
Shaw 3, Claflin 0
After Shaw took the first set (25-19), the second set was tied at 22-22 before the Bears reeled off three straight points to win the second set, as well en route to a sweep. Over the three sets, Shaw had a hitting percentage of .361 with Noelani Beard (16) and Mallory Brown (15) combining for 31 kills. Breelyn Clark added 45 assists and 10 digs for the Bears. Claflin's Danelle Branch and Simone Newell each had a team-high seven kills and Newell also had a team-high 10 digs.
Bowie State 3, Livingstone 0
Bowie State was more efficient (38 kills to 12 errors) than Livingstone (25 kills to 21 errors) and that earned the Bulldogs the sweep. Jailyn Ivey had a game-high 12 kills for the Bulldogs. Bowie State's Lindsey Grossman added 19 assists and Neysha Washington had 11 digs, both game-highs. For the Blue Bears, Taylor Grant's eight kills were a team-high and Dekiya Wilson-Thomas had 12 assists.
Winston-Salem State 3, Lincoln (PA) 0
The first set was a true back-and-forth before Winston-Salem State took the second and third sets by scores of 25-19. Lincoln's Erica Taylor had a game-high 11 kills and Janaa Smith's 21 assists were also a game-high. The Rams' Rheign Davis led the team with nine kills, plus five blocks and Niyonna McIntyre led with eight blocks. 
St. Augustine's 3, Virginia State 2
The Falcons picked up their second win of the roundup after trailing in the match, two sets to one. The fifth set was anyone's game with a tie score at 10-10 before St. Augustine pulled away. Virginia State and St. Augustine's each had two players earn double-digit kills: Trojans Helena Eubanks (17) and Amaya Cooper (10) and Falcons Madison Jones (14) and Fesili Masaniai (11). Jones also had a game-high eight blocks. St. Aug's Sydney Moore had game-high totals of 32 assists and four aces and Tionna Graham had a team-high 27 digs. For the Trojans, Emma Quarles had a team-high 27 assists and Najlaa Williams provided the squad with a game-high 34 digs. 
Fayetteville State 3, Virginia Union 2
For the second time Sunday, Fayetteville State duked it out and came out ahead in a five-set match. It was another alternating match with FSU taking the first (25-19), third (25-21) and fifth (15-11) sets. The Panthers had forced a fifth set by winning the fourth, 25-22. FSU's Cassandra Watson led with 12 kills and Xiamana Spikes added 11. Kyra Webb's 20 assists were a team-high for the Broncos. Virginia State's Amilex Lopez-Ayala erupted for 20 kills and Ashlee Franklin had a game-high 22 assists. 
Elizabeth City State 3, Johnson C. Smith 0
The Vikings goes 3-0 in this roundup by quickly sweeping the Golden Bulls. Elizabeth City State's hitting percentage was .369, compared to .014 for Johnson C. Smith. Elizabeth Kellum had a game-high 12 kills and was second on ECSU with 17 assists. The Vikings' Kayleigh Sullivan finished with 19 assists and Naijya Leggett added 13 digs, both game-highs. For JCSU, Camri Goodwin's five kills were enough for the team-high and Yasmine Cannon added 12 assists.

These round-ups are instrumental tune-ups in advance of the 2022 CIAA Volleyball Tournament, which is slated for November 8-12th with the semifinals and championship game played at the Salem Civic Center in Salem, VA.
