MURFREESBORO, NC- Chowan University's 15th varsity sport,
women's lacrosse, had their first practice on Monday. The
2012-2013 season marks the first year Chowan will sponsor a women's
lacrosse team.
Head coach Eryn McCaffrey stated, "I am extremely excited to have
our inaugural class in place for the first year of our
program. Each girl shows tremendous potential, and as a
cohesive unit we aim to go far."
The student-athletes spent their first practice implementing plays
and getting a feel for how to work with one another on the
field. With lacrosse being a spring sport, the fall season
serves as an opportunity for the team to develop and improve before
stepping on the field for the competitive season in the spring.
"I am confident in each of their potential on and off the
field. We all look forward to our first home game
in February and we appreciate the support we have received from the
university and the community", McCaffrey continued.
Prior to coming to Chowan, McCaffrey served as an assistant coach
at Alderson-Broaddus in Philippi, West VA. McCaffrey
was a goalkeeper for Saint Andrews Presbyterian College and she is
currently the NCAA DII all-time record holder in minutes played
(3991.29) and is second all time in career saves (880). Not
only is this McCaffrey's first head coaching position, she is also
the first women's lacrosse coach in program history.
