CIAA Conference Expansion Spurs Change Back to “North” and “South” Divisions

May 3, 2010

Hampton, VA…The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Board of Directors has decided upon a readjustment of the conference’s current divisional alignment to accommodate the CIAA’s newest additions, Lincoln (PA) and Winston-Salem State Universities.

Due to the geographical locations of the conference’s newest members- Eastern Pennsylvania and Western North Carolina; including Chowan University in northeastern North Carolina, the “North” “South” divisional groupings will be implemented for all sports that use divisional rankings.

Affected Sports Northern Division Southern Division
Football Bowie State Fayetteville State
Women’s and Men’s Basketball Chowan Johnson C. Smith
Women’s Bowling Elizabeth City State Livingstone
Men’s and Women’s Tennis Lincoln (PA) St. Augustine’s
Softball St. Paul’s Shaw
Volleyball Virginia State Winston-Salem State
  Virginia Union

The 2010-2011 season will begin the CIAA’s third run using the North/South divide.  In previous years under this system, 1970-1972 and 1981-1990, school locations in the conference ranged from Baltimore, MD and Dover, DE to Winston-Salem, NC.  Historically, Lincoln University (PA) is the conference’s northern-most institution.  West Virginia State University in Institute, WV has been the furthest west.
