Schools
May 25, 2006
Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority officials presented a $1
million check to Johnson C.
Smith University President Dorothy Cowser Yancy, Thursday, May 25,
2006, at the university
campus. Yancy received the check on behalf of Commissioner Leon
Kerry, who will distribute funds among the CIAA member schools.
Yancy, who is also a past chairwoman of the Central
Intercollegiate Athletic Association Board, also talked to media
about the importance of the $1 million for student scholarships.
CRVA led the fundraising efforts on behalf of the city and received
contributions from the State of North Carolina, City of Charlotte,
Mecklenburg County, Bank of America, Wachovia, Foundation of the
Carolinas, Stoney Sellars, Charlotte Regional Sports Commission,
Duke Energy Corporation, Philip Morris and several small businesses
in the community. Moving the tournament to Charlotte garnered $1.8
million for scholarships this year, compared to $1 million raised
last year when the event was held in Raleigh.
The tournament brought an increase in the total attendance
figures as well as a rise in economic impact, especially to
Charlotte. Yancy will discuss those details during the brief
presentation.
