Relay Victory Keys Successful Season Debut for SAU Track and Field

RALEIGH, N.C. (Dec. 2) – Saint Augustine's University opened the indoor track and field season in impressive fashion Saturday in the JDL College Kickoff Classic.

The Falcons and Lady Falcons recorded 21 top 10 finishes, including a victory in the women's 4x400 relay. The foursome of Iris Robinson (Sr./Birmingham, Ala.), Marissa Gale (Sr./Trinidad & Tobago), Ade Hunter (Sr./Philadelphia, PA) and Shannon Kalawan (So./Westmoreland, Jamaica) outran Division I schools North Carolina A&T State University and North Carolina State University in its 4x400 win. Its provisional time of 3:49.63 was faster than the times of A&T (3:49.66) and N.C. State (3:52.79) inside the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, NC.

Kalawan also ran the fastest collegiate time (56.91) and the second-lowest time overall in the women's 400 dash. Four Lady Falcons, including Kalawan, were among the top nine 400 finishers including Robinson (3rd/57.74), Gale (5th/58.28) and Hunter (9th/59.88).

In other women's events, Magaly Tshipopo (Jr./France) tied for fifth in the high jump (5-5) and placed seventh in the long jump (17-6.75). Gale placed fifth (25.52) and Leah Barker (Sr./St. Michaels, Barbados) was eighth in the 200 dash (25.86). 

Florence Fields (Fr./St. Phillip, Barbados) was seventh in the 800 run (2:22.08) and ninth in the mile run (5:44.41). Janiyah Harrington (Fr.) was 10th in the triple jump (35-3.25).

Among the men, Jumonne Exeter (Sr./Turks & Caicos) finished second in the triple jump (49-10.50) and sixth in the long jump (22-5.75). Dantavian Evans (Jr./Gainesville, FL) was second in the 200 dash (21.86) and tied for ninth in the 60 dash (6.93). 

Justin Williams (Jr./Long Island, NY) placed third in the triple jump (47-10.50) and Kirvano Handfield (Sr./Turks & Caicos) finished third in the high jump (6-10.75). Dakari Hightower (Sr./Washington) placed fourth in the high jump (6-8.75) and Harvey McSwain (Sr./Charlotte, NC) finished fifth in the 200 dash (22.40). The quartet of Adrian Kimmons (Sr./Cold Water, MS), McSwain, Robert Walker (Fr./Newburgh, NY) and Evans placed fourth in the 4x400 relay (3:20.77).

The Falcons and Lady Falcons will compete again in the St. Thomas Aquinas College Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y., on Jan. 12, 2018.
