Bowie, MD (April 20, 2017) – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women’s Tennis Championship is set to open April 20 at 10:00 a.m. on the campus of Bowie State University with its eight team, single elimination bracket. The three-day championship is open to the public with FREE admission.
The CIAA Women’s Tennis Championship will kick off with a match between No. 2 Shaw University and No. 7 Elizabeth City State University. The Lady Bears marked a perfect 8-0 Southern Division record while only letting go of one match to CIAA rival Chowan University for an 11-1 conference record. The Vikings are currently 2-3 in the Northern Division and 3-10 in CIAA play. Historically, Shaw has been dominant in women’s tennis, winning 7 Championship Titles since 2006.
Thursday’s second match will feature No. 3 Virginia State University (6-1, 10-3 CIAA) versus No. 6 Virginia Union University (3-3, 6-7 CIAA) followed by a Southern Division battle between No. 4 Winston-Salem State University (6-2, 8-4 CIAA) and No. 5 Johnson C. Smith University (4-4, 6-6 CIAA). In Round 1’s final match, the defending CIAA Women’s Tennis Champion Chowan University (2-0, 13-0) will face No. 8 Fayetteville State University (2-6, 3-10 CIAA).
Championship competition will continue at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 21 with the championship match slated for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22.
