RALEIGH, NC – The top two teams in both the men’s and women’s divisions lived up to their billing as both the regular season champion Chowan Hawks and Lady Hawks and the runners-up Shaw Bears and Lady Bears advanced to the championship match of the 2016 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s and Women’s Championship Tournaments with 5-0 victories in the semifinal round of the tournament, Friday morning.
The Chowan Lady Hawks earned their ticket to the championship match when the team opened the day with a 5-0 win over the fourth-seeded Winston-Salem State Rams. The Lady Hawks took wins in doubles play, beginning with an 8-1 win at #3 doubles, followed by an 8-0 win at #1 doubles and closing out play with an 8-5 win at #2 doubles in a heated doubles match. From there, the Lady Hawks took a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 singles and closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 singles. With the win, the Hawks return to the CIAA Championship match.
The second-seeded Shaw Lady Bears followed suit when they took at 5-0 win over the third-seeded Virginia State Lady Trojans. The Lady Bears kicked things off with a pair of doubles wins with an 8-1 win at #1 singles and followed by an 8-1 win at #2 doubles. Neither team had enough players to compete at #3 doubles. As such, the Lady Bears got an early start in singles play when they took a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 singles. The Lady Bears followed up the effort with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4 singles before the match was decided on a 6-1, 6-2 win at #3 singles to advance to the championship match.
With the effort, the Lady Hawks and the Lady Bears will meet in the championship match for the third straight season. Both the Lady Hawks and the Lady Bears have each won the title once as Chowan won the 2014 championship while Shaw won last season’s championship.
Things looked very similar on the men’s side of the bracket with the Chowan Hawks and the Shaw Bears advancing to the championship match with 5-0 victories of their own.
The Shaw Bears were the first team to punch their ticket to the championship match when they took a 5-0 win over the third-seeded Virginia State Trojans. The Bears kicked things off with an 8-0 win at #2 doubles before another 8-0 win at #3 doubles. The #1 doubles match was a heated affair with the Bears closing things out for an 8-5 win at #1 doubles. From there, the Bears closed things out in singles play when the Bears got a 6-0, 6-1 win at #6 singles before a Shaw 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 singles closed the match.
The Hawks wasted little time taking their spot in the championship game as well when they took a 5-0 win over the fourth-seeded Virginia Union Panthers. The Hawks got things started early when they took an 8-0 win at #3 doubles before taking an 8-1 win at #2 doubles win and an 8-4 win at #1 doubles. From there, the Hawks took a pair of singles to close out the match when they took a 6-0, 6-0 win at #6 singles before closing the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at #3 singles.
The win set up a matchup between the Bears and the Hawks in the championship match for the third straight season with the Bears taking the last two CIAA Men’s Tennis championships.
The 2016 CIAA Men’s and Women’s Championship Matches are scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. start at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. The women’s championship match will open the day with the men’s championship following the championship ceremony. The championship match will be held at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Admission is free.
