JCSU Golf Team Visits Clear Creek Elementary School

Charlotte, N.C. (April 13, 2016) –As part of the upcoming CIAA Golf Championships, the Johnson C. Smith University golf team visited Clear Creek Elementary School as part of the community service component of the championship.

Members of the team, along with head coach William Watkins, visited two classrooms on Wednesday morning and emphasized to the students the importance of making good grades, being polite and answered questions about the game of golf and what it takes to be a student-athlete at the collegiate level.

“I had a blast with the kids,” said Joshua Steger.  “Being able to interact with them and seeing them learn and answering their questions is a highlight of the week for me,” he said.

The first visit was to a third grade classroom, where the team read to the kids and went over reading comprehension questions.  Following the lesson, they fielded questions about the game of golf and also got to learn what sports the students were interested in.  They also stressed the importance of good nutrition and having a healthy lifestyle.  Although basketball and football where the primary interest of the students, one student mentioned that he had played golf with his father and liked watching it on television.

The second visit of the day was to a kindergarten class.  While with those students, the team also read to them and helped the students answer questions regarding the subject of the book.

“It is important for us to be good role models for young kids,” said JCSU’s Dejuan Powell.  “I enjoyed the time we spent with them today.  They were so enthusiastic and eager to hear about what attending college is like,” he said.

Coach Watkins mentioned that it is a great way for the student-athletes to influence younger students.  “We were looking forward to this visit and would like to thank the faculty and staff at Clear Creek Elementary School for allowing us to come to spend some time with their kids,” he said.  “We definitely will be back.”

The 2016 CIAA Golf Championships will be hosted by Larkhaven Golf Course in Charlotte, N.C.  First round play begins on Thursday, April 14 with the final round taking place on Friday, April 15.  Admission is free and open to the public.
