Winston-Salem State and Shaw Advance to Finals of 2012 CIAA Women’s Tennis Championship
PETERSBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (20-8)
advanced to finals of the 2012 Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (CIAA) Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament,
Friday when the team took a 5-0 win over the host Virginia State
Lady Trojans. The Lady Rams will look for their second straight
CIAA championship when they take on the winner of the Shaw/Johnson
C Smith semifinal match.
The #2 Lady Rams put on a great performance to take the win as they
fought off a talented Virginia State team, Friday. The Lady Rams
had to bring their best efforts early as they took three wins in
doubles play, 8-5, 8-3, and 8-4. The team carried their strong play
into singles play with wins at #3 and #6 singles. Junior Bianka
Locklear took the #3 singles win, 6-2, 6-1 and Chelsea Chatman took
the #6 singles win 6-0, 6-1.
The Shaw women's tennis team easily defeated Johnson C. Smith 5-0
in semifinal action.
The Lady Bears swept the three doubles matches with identical 8-0
scores, then won the match when number two singles player Jessica
Medina and number one singles and CIAA Player of the Year Lolia
Kienka reported wins in their matches. Medina downed Imani
Morrison 6-0, 6-0, while Kienka topped Keiana Love 6-1, 6-0.
With the win, the Lady Rams advance to the finals of the 2012 CIAA
Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament for the second
straight year.
