Top Seeds Winston-Salem State, Chowan Advance at CIAA Baseball Tourney

 

PETERSBURG, VA- After one day of play at the 2012 CIAA baseball Tournament, things have stayed true to form with the top three seeds advancing to Friday’s semi-finals.

# 4 Saint Augustine’s College became the first team ousted from the 2012 tournament after suffering setbacks at the hands of #1 Winston-Salem State 5-1 and #3 Virginia State 8-2.

Chowan University will face Winston-Salem State in the winners’ bracket in Friday’s first semifinal at 11:00am. The Virginia State Trojans will take on the loser of the WSSU/Chowan matchup, with the winner earning a berth in Saturday’s Championship Game.

Chowan University 8, Virginia State 0

Chowan University used a five-run 5th inning in route to an 8-0 shutout of Virginia State University. Hawk pitcher Brett Garrett threw a complete game allowing only 4 hits while striking out six. Brandon Mack went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and added two stolen bases to lead the charge for the Hawks. In their 5th inning scoring outburst, Chowan batted around then added two runs in the 6th and one in the 7th.

Winston-Salem State 5, Saint Augustine’s 1

Winston-Salem State University pitcher Tyler Hickernell was close to flawless in the Rams’ 5-1 decision over Saint Augustine’s College. Hickernell pitched 8 complete innings; if not for a solo homer (SAC’s Ariel Polanco) given up by reliever Wesley Edwards in the top of the ninth, the WSSU starter would have earned a one-hit shutout. In five of the eight innings he pitched versus SAC, Hickernell retired the Falcons in order and finished the game with three strike outs, 12 groundouts, and 5 fly-outs.

Virginia State 8, Saint Augustine’s 2

Virginia State’s offense scattered 13 hits and capitalized on 4 Saint Augustine’s errors as the Trojans rebounded for an 8-2 win over the Falcons in the nightcap. VSU remained on the attack, tallying 7 stolen bases to keep the Falcon defense on their heels all afternoon. The Falcons end the season at 19-31 overall while VSU improves to 24-17 on the year.

Play will resume tomorrow at 11:00am at Whaley Colbert Field on the campus of Virginia State University.
