NASA Education Administrator, Astronaut and NFL Draft Pick To Address CIAA Football Championship Participants

Durham, NC…The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association
Fall Championship Season will continue this Friday with the
Football Championship Awards Luncheon scheduled for 12 Noon at the
Durham Convention Center.
Leland Melvin, NASA Associate Administrator for Education, will
join the celebration in honoring this year’s 2011 All-CIAA
Football Team, Rookie Team and selected Players of the Year.
Leland Melvin, who has logged more than 565 hours in space, is
responsible for the development and implementation of the
agency’s education programs that strengthen student
involvement and public awareness about its scientific goals and
missions. In this role, he leads the agency in inspiring interest
in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM),
through NASA’s unique mission, workforce, facilities,
research and innovations.
Melvin, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the 1989 NFL draft,
currently serves on the White House National Science and Technology
Council’s Committee on STEM Education; chairs NASA’s
Education Coordinating Committee; and is the United States
representative and chair of the International Space Education
Board.
The Football Championship Luncheon is by invitation only, however
we welcome media to cover this event and are providing a 30-minute
post luncheon opportunity for coach and player interviews.
