Fayetteville State, Bowie State Unbeaten In Double-Elimination Bracket Play At CIAA Bowing Championships

DURHAM, N.C. - The CIAA Women's Bowling Championship is down to six
teams heading into the final day of the tournament on Monday.
The teams of Fayetteville State, Bowie State, Virginia State,
Winston-Salem State, Saint Paul's, Virginia State and Elizabeth
City State are still alive after surviving four Baker matches and
the start of double-elimination bracket play on Sunday at AMF
Durham Lanes.
Play resumes Monday at 9:35 a.m. with Fayetteville State taking on
defending CIAA champion Bowie State in the winner's bracket. Both
schools are the only unbeaten teams left in bracket play after each
winning twice. The winner of the matchup between the regular-season
division winners advances to the championship round. On the
elimination side of the bracket, Winston-Salem State faces Saint
Paul's and Virginia State tangles with Elizabeth City State.
All six teams along with Saint Augustine's College and Johnson C.
Smith qualified for the bracket round by having the top eight total
pin counts after Baker matches Sunday. The total pin count from the
Baker matches and Saturday's match play determined which teams
reached the bracket round.
Fayetteville State had the highest total pin count with 8,585
followed by Bowie State with 8,186. Saint Paul's was third with
8,081 and Elizabeth City State was fourth with 7,846. Virginia
State was fifth with 7,531, Winston-Salem State was sixth with
7,283 and Johnson C. Smith was seventh with 7,158. Saint
Augustine's College was eighth with 7,058. Five schools were
eliminated following the Baker matches.
In bracket play, Fayetteville State defeated Saint Augustine's 4-0,
Saint Paul's beat Winston-Salem State 4-1, Bowie State beat Johnson
C. Smith 4-0 and Elizabeth City State beat Virginia State 4-2. In
the winner's bracket, Fayetteville State beat Saint Paul's and
Bowie State downed ECSU by identical 4-1 scores. In the elimination
bracket, Winston-Salem State topped Saint Augustine's 3-2 with two
ties and Virginia State defeated Johnson C. Smith 4-2.
