FORT LEE, VA – The Virginia State golf team holds a three
shot edge over Fayetteville State and there is a four-way tie atop
the individual leader board after the first day of the 2010 CIAA
Golf Championships hosted at the Cardinal Golf Course in Fort Lee,
Virginia.
Virginia State shot an 18-over, 306 Thursday to best the Broncos of
Fayetteville State who shot a 21-over, 309.
Brian Wood and Jedidiah Frazier led the Trojans and Broncos
respectively, each shooting a two-over, 74 to tie for the
individual lead. Also in the clubhouse with a two-over, 74
after the opening round was Kenneth Bethea of Livingstone and Derek
Johnson of St. Augustine’s.
Chowan (329, +41) and Virginia Union (330, +42) finished third and
fourth respectively while Elizabeth City State is close behind with
a 45-over, 333. St. Augustine’s is also in the mix
after shooting a 51-over, 339.
Livingstone finished the opening round in the seventh position
after shooting an 80-over, 368. Johnson C. Smith came in
eighth with a 101-over, 389 while St. Paul’s rounded out the
team field with a 163-over, 451.
After the top four individuals, there are also 14 other golfers who
are within five shots of the overall lead. Gregory Hunt and
Stuart Larus of Virginia State sit one shot and two shots behind
respectively while Corey Garvey of Chowan is also only two shots
behind.
The second and final round of the 2010 CIAA Golf Championships will
commence on Friday at 8 a.m. with the top four teams (VSU, FSU, CU
and VUU) teeing off in the opening group. St.
Augustine’s, Elizabeth City and Livingstone will start in the
second group at 8:50 while Johnson C. Smith, St. Paul’s and
the top five individual golfers will be in the final group at 9:40.
