VIKINGS, TROJANS, FALCONS ADVANCE IN CIAA BASEBALL TOURNEY
Ninth Inning Error Gives Top Seeded Saint Augustine's New Life in Elimination Game

April 16, 2009

PETERSBURG, VA- After being upset in game one of the 2009 CIAA Baseball Tournament the top seeded Saint Augustine's Falcons narrowly escaped elimination with a 1-0 win over rival Shaw University Thursday evening at Whaley Colbert Field on the campus of Virginia State University.

The two Raleigh schools found themselves facing a do-or-die situation in the double elimination tournament after Saint Augustine's was shocked by #4 Elizabeth City State 11-6 while the Shaw Bears fell 11-9 to the host Virginia State Trojans.

The score stood at 0-0 with one out and the bases empty in the bottom of the 9th when a routine catch yielded an error in right field allowing the Falcon's Kevin Johnson to advance all the way to third base. Designated hitter Ryan Scwedo then singled, scoring Johnson and giving Saint Augustine's the victory while subsequently eliminating the Bears from the 2009 Tournament.

Between the two teams (and including the game winning run) the 9 inning contest saw only four runners advance beyond second base.

Tomorrow's action will begin at 11:00am as the winner's bracket will resume with Elizabeth City State facing Virginia State. The winner will advance to Saturday's Championship game while the loser will take on Saint Augustine's in 2:00pm's elimination game.
