Two-Time Defending Conference Champions
April 18, 2009
PETERSBURG, VA- Saint Augustine’s College and Virginia State
University will face off at 1:00pm to decide the winner of the 2009
CIAA Baseball Tournament.
If the Falcons (24-12) want to capture their first conference title
since 1998, they will need to defeat the Trojans twice on Saturday.
In the double elimination format, SAC avenged an 11-6 loss to
Elizabeth City State (12-24) in the tournament’s opening game
on Thursday by ousting the Vikings 12-8 in the loser’s
bracket Friday afternoon.
ECSU suffered a 22-9 loss to the host Trojans (22-24) in the
winner’s bracket Friday morning.
Virginia State defeated Saint Augustine’s 14-7 in last
year’s final to capture their second consecutive CIAA
Tournament Championship. With the Finals’ rematch from 2008,
the Falcons will look to prove why they won the CIAA regular season
outright and was the top seed entering championship play. SAC beat
the Trojans three of four meetings in 2009.
The championship game is slated for a 1:00pm start with the
