TROJANS CLAIM BASEBALL CROWN; DEFEAT SHAW BEARS 14-7
Virginia State Captures 21st Conference Championship; Receives Automatic Bid to Division II Playoffs

PETERSBURG, VA- The Virginia State University Trojans defeated the Shaw University Bears en route to the 2007 CIAA Baseball Championship Saturday afternoon at Whaley Colbert Field.

The Trojans (22-29) earned their 21st CIAA Baseball crown as the only undefeated team in the tournament. VSU becomes the first team in CIAA history to receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Playoff which will begin May 17th at a site to be determined.
 
The Bears (24-21) held a 5-2 lead entering the bottom of the 4th. Then the Bears opened up the bottom of the 4th with three consecutive errors which scored Jason Jennings followed by a 2RBI single by B.J. Wood to tie the game at 5 apiece. The inning proved to be the difference in the contest as it lasted nearly 30 minutes and by its end, VSU distanced themselves from their opponents, scoring eleven runs on four hits and four Shaw Bear errors. The Bears would add two runs in the next inning while the Trojans tacked on one more in the bottom of the 5th for the final score.
 
VSU was paced by tournament MVP Andrew Holt who went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI, 5 assists and a putout. The 2007 CIAA All-Tournament Team is listed below:
